Directed by Pierre lin and Barbara Coleman, the main characters Include, left to right Mlles'Potter, Paul Let Isle and Harry Nelken. "It was real," said a spectator. Potter is so good, audience hates him BY RON WASSINK When an actor or actress knows that the audience either loves or hates the character they portray they know their acting was a success. Miles Potter is such art actor. As Henri, the main character in The Innocent and The Just at the Blyth Summer Festival, Mr. Potter was such a good actor that the audience hated hint, some to the point where ,Throwing rotten tomatoes was too good for him. The Innocent and The Just is a play that shows what could, and probably does occur in real life --maintaining one's social and reli- gious status instead of justice being served. Written by Quebec playwright Gratien Gelinas, The Innocent and The Just has appeared on CBC television and is considered a classic in Canadian theatre. Having • directed over 50 plays, this is the first English speaking play Pierre Collin has directed. Let's see more of him. The set and lighting. designed by Dorian Clark, cannot be surpassed. The platy, which takes place in a Montreal hotel room, is complete with a 1959 calendar, furniture, wallpaper and telephone to match that time period and a cruicifix to show a devout Catholic family. The play is about a French-Canadian family and their simple servant who travel to Montreal for the trial of Gary, a son and brother, charged with the murder of a rival suitor. The servant is the only eye -witness to a fight which ends in death. The audience never sees or hears the accused, The mother of the family is such a devout Catholic, she's hilarious. She worries most about where her rosary beads have gone, setting up a religious statue, lighting 53 candles and gazing at a picture of her accused Li9ns pool fund over $3,100 Additional donations for the Lions pool maintenance fund appeal has brought the total money raised over 53,100. Other donations include: Mrs. Isabel Chesney. -55; Wayne5', and Harold Smith Construction Ltd., 530; A.Y. McLean, 550; Bob and Betty's Variety, 550; Tom Devereaux, 550; L.B. The same is true with Phil, a joking, happy alcoholic. Phil. played by'Harry Nelken, seems comfortable with his humourous role, providing a balance of comedy to the serious side of the play. Miles Potter as Henri, is the exact opposite of his brother Phil --underhanded, conniving and violent. He is compared to a bulldozer in the play, pushy, always getting his own way. There is reference made that he beats his wile. To save face and the family name, Henri forces the honest Bouisille, (who is terrified of the wrath of God), who has sworn to tell the truth. the whole truth and nothing but the truth. to give false testimony. The rest of the fancily either agree or are forced to go along with the idea - except the mother who thinks her son is innocent. Throughout the play, the audience is convinced of the guilt of the accused. The play is so intense that many times the audience feels they are in the hotel room, part of the scene. Audience comments were positive. "It was excellent...marvelous...it really captured the spirit...it was good entertainment...it was real," were some of, the comments over- heard. Following the trial, the family enters the room. the mother sighing with relief. The threat had worked. her son was innocent. "I told you so. He's no more rotten that the rest of the family," says the mother. The ending of the pray is superb and surprising. So as not to spoil the last scene, plan to attend, The Innocent and The Just runs until August 20. TIE HURON EXPOSITOR!-AUQUST 17, 198 . — A7 How the Other Half. Loves opens at Playhouse'p Alan Ayckboum's hilari- ously scatterbrained comedy, How the other half loves, opens at Huron Country Play- house August 3. The comedy features a trick in telescoping space and bending time that is practical- ly a demonstration of Ein- stein's theory of relativity, except that it's funnier. By means of a setting that represents the living rooms of two suburban homes at once, one fashionably decorated, the other shabby lower mid- dle-class, the play reveals the simultaneous action of the two couples dwelling in these very different domiciles.
