Third art: exhibition to open in Blyth
THE HURON EXPOSITOR, AUGUST 10, 1983 — A7
O,n August 13 the third
exhibition of the season, a
selection of paintings and
prints by artists from the
Ojibwey Cultural. Founda-
tion, will open in the Blyth
Centre for the Arts Art
Gallery. The work of nine
artists, (one woman and 8
men), will be on display in the
gallery until Sept. 14,
The group includes Blake
Debassige, Shirley Chee-
choo, Leland Bell, Blair De-
bassige, Don' Ense, Carl
Beam, James Simon, Randy,
Trudeau and Michael Robin-
son. Their work is in collec-
tions in Canada and around
the world including The Mu-
seum of Man, the royal
Ontario Museum private col-
lection of the president of the
Chase Manhatten Bank.
Two of the artists, Leland
Bell and James Simon, Mary
Lou Fox from the Ojibwey
Cultural Foundation and
Walter Sunahara, head of the
Native Arts Division of the
Ontario Arts Council will be
in attendance when Bev
Walker, chairman of the
Visual Arts Committee of the
Blyth Centre for the Arts
opens the exhibition,
On Sat, Aug 13 and Sun.
Aug. 14 at 8:30 p.m. The
Native Theatre School from
Meaford, under the auspices
of the Association for Native
Development in the Visual
and Performing Arts will
present "Ne-gah-neen" (A
Fantastic Pilgrimage); The
play tells the story of a young
woman's journey into the
past in an attempt to reconcile
her traditional roots with a

Jon and Colleen Frais6r of Toronto visited with Gerry
Fraiser in Egmondville.
Neighbours on Con. 6 and 7, McKillop Township
gathered at the home of Paul and Barbara Storey, R.R. 1,
Dublin, to honor Leo and Eileen Greidanus and family who
moved to Seaforth recently after 14 years on the line. Larry
Wheatley read an address of good wishes on behalf of the
neighbours. Eileen, Leo and Tony, Steven and Krista were.
presented with a set of lawn furniture.
About 500 Swiss -Canadians attended a celebration of
the Swiss national day last Sunday at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Bruno Braeker, RR4, Walton, The consul general of
Switlterland and his wife attended the day of traditional
costumes, food, music and dancing. Special events
included a tug of war between the dairy and the pork
farmers, a parachute demonstration and a recorded
message from Pierre Aubert, president of Switzerland.
The Swiss and Canadian flags flew from the Braeker silo
during the day.
Andy and Winn McLean recently attended the Canadian
Community Newspaper Association convention in Winni-
peg. Mr. McLean, former publisher of the Expositor,
received a prize for having been at 30 CCNA conventions,
more than anyone else present.
A Varna couple, Peggy and Ron Keys, spent three days
in July at the Young Couples Conference, sponsored by
United Cooperatives of Ontario. It was held at a summer
camp, just north of Orillia.
Mr. Thomas Cluff of Toronto is visiting his sisters Miss
Ruth Cluff, Mrs. Lloyd Hoggarth and Mr. Hoggarth.
Mrs. Patrick Smith and girls of Mountainvlew,
California returned home after spending three weeks with
her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Sinclair.
Family and friends gathered at the home of F.C.J. Sills
to celebrate the 40th wedding.anniversary of Tom and Nora
Sills who now reside in Abbotsford, B.C. They came down
from B.C. along with their son Tom Jr. and family of
Calgary. Other out-of-town visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Sills Jr. and John of Baltimore; Anne and John Mason,
Lansing, Michigan; Mary and Gerald Townsend and family
of Arthur, Ont.; Jane • and Leonard Muegge and family of
London; Margaret Sills of Welland o -and Joan Sills of
London. It was purely an outdoor affair with a pig roast,
games, speeches and entertainment with lots of food. •
Gordon Harkes, 163 Albert St., Clinton is the latest winner
of the Lions Elimination draw of 525.

PAUL VOGELS
Paul C. 'Vogels, 68, of RR2
Dublin died on Aug. 5 at the
Seaforth Community Hospi-
tal.
Born 'in Eindhoven. Hol-
land, he was the son of the
late Hyacinth Vogels and
Petronella Strijbos. He came
to Canada in 1950 and settled
in Dublin.
Surviving arc his wife,
Anne; two daughters. Mrs,
Dorothy Van Steelandt, of
Blyth and Mrs. Nellie Van
Bakel, of Blyth; three sons,
Ginth, of Dublin, John, of
Fullarton and Paul, of Kip
pen; two sisters, Mrs. Lina
Coolen, of Holland, and Mrs.
Nellie Toenders, -of Sarnia;
one brother. Renicr, of Hol-
land and 14 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two
brothers Jacobus and Piet,
both of Holland.
Friends were received at
R.S. Box Funeral Home in
Seaforth on Aug. 7 and the
funeral service took place at
the St. Columban Roman
Catholic Church on Aug. 8
with Rev. P.A. Oostvecn
officiating. Interment was at
the St. Columban Roman
Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John
Segeren, Peter Klomp, Mari -
nus DeBruyn, Ted Van Bakel,
Harry Reynen, and Cor Van-
derPryt. Flower bearers were
Chris Vogels, Kathy Van
Bakel. Brian Van Steelandt
and Jason Vogels.

the Canadian Cancer Society
or the charity of your choice.
HIRAM BLANCHARD
Hiram Turnbull Blanch-
ard, 88, of RR4 Walton, died
August 3 at the Seaforth
Community Hospital.
Born in McKillop Town-
ship, he was a son of the late
Melvin Blanchard and Betsy
Dodds. He was predeceased
by his wife, Gladys Turnbull
in 1950.
Surviving are two sons,
Gordon, of McKillop Town-
ship and Keith, of Windsor;
three daughters, Mrs. Helen
Nichol, of Stratford, Mrs.
Berva Watson, of RR1 Blyth,
and Mrs. Edith Gibson, of
Gorrie, 18 grandchildren and
17 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by
two brothers, Tom and Mel-
vin, one sister, Mrs. Bessie
King, one grandchild and
two foster -grandchildren.
Friends were received at
the Whitney-Ribey funeral
home in Seaforth where a
service was held on Aug. 5.
Interment was at the Mait-
landbank Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Ron
Blanchard; of Seaforth; John
Blanchard of Vanastra;
Wayne Nichol of Hamilton;
Bruce Blanchard, of Wind-
sor; Harvey Gibson, of Gor-
rie; Carmon Bernard of Brus-
sels.
The flower bearers were
great grandsons Scott Row-
ley of London and Brett.

The Board of Directors of
the Blyth Summer Festival
will be cooking up a storm at
this year's Gourmet Dinner.
Everything on the menu is
homemade right down to the
mustard. And what a menu it
is!...smoked trout, chicken -
filled crepes, ham, turkey,
iced cherry soup and of
course a range of garden
fresh vegetables and salads,
pies and fruits.
The dinner will be .held in
the Blyth Community Centre
on August 13 at 6 p.m. After
dinner Maritime Faces will be
playing in the Blyth Memorial
Hall at 8:30. Ted Johns and
Robbie O'Neill bring the east
coast to the stage in Blyth in
their magical performances.
