It is written by Janet Amos who plays the main character, Rose Clarke, a soft s1:ken. but talkative Women's Institute.} toember in Huron County. The stb ry begins in the Blyth Memorial Hal[, thellocation of the WI meettpgg Mrs: Clarke 'la giving a slide ppresentation on Ireland, to WI members. Playing the part of a babbling old woman, Ms. Antos adds to the hujlnpr with her facial expressions. "Out WI meetings are so long and dull, we might kali well be dead." During the slide show, Mrs. Clarke comes to a' scene of a road. "Never take a picture without writing down where it was taken. I took this picture and have no idea where it is:f ' Part way through her show, the gossipy Mrs. Clarke is told to leave by a thoroughly disgusted and fed -up custodian, played by Alan Williams. Mr. Williams' distinct English accent suited the many characters he portrayed. But his constant, loud, sometimes yelling voice, became a bit nerve-wracking near the end of the two hour play. Sent on her way by the custodian, a tearful Mrs. Clarke perks up when her niece Kate Ross (Anne Anglin), suggests travelling to Ireland to research family history. While her aunt will search out her roots, Kate thinks the timing is perfect to find material for a new play. In Ireland, the couple meet many long lost Dempsey relatives, all portrayed by Mr. Williams. In her old age, Mrs. Clarke is too cheap to eat out and is reluctant to eat her hard boiled eggs, brought from home, because she doesn't know where to dispose of the shells. As vacation/rs, the two ladies do not realize the difference between north and south - protestant and catholic. Both become bored and dis-heartened with their holiday, and wish to return home. Visiting a relative in Dungannon, Northern Ireland, the audience jumps, as do Rose and Kate, as bombs go off. The sound effects, mainly , proyided by the Blyth Festival Singers, were a bonus for the audience. At times, however they were distracting drowning the voices of the actresses. The Dungannon relative talked at great Ienght of the bombings - the way we talk of the weather. "He was shot dead. They were blown to bits." "They will never bomb us into unity," says the relative. The twosome return home, but the excitement does not end. Mrs. Clarke receives a letter from an Irish relative, which relates more of the family tree. In a far-fetched, but hilarious scene, she learns the Dempseys go back as far as the second son of Noah. During intermission, audience members were overheard to say the play was good, but hard to follow. Possibly more dramatic t ' a costume changes would help. Janet Amos as Rose Clarke. Another said people just come for a good laugh and don't see the cultural aspect at My Wild Irish Rose runs until the end of all. A good laugh is guaranteed.
