Reids enjoy good health
More than 50 years after he walked her
home from church for the first time. Nelson
and Annie Reid celebrated their 50th
anniversary at the same church, the Duffs
United in Walton, on Friday, June 17.
Even though they were married in 1933
during the Depression, they always had
"lots to eat and lots to wear, says Annie.
At that time, Annie remembers that pigs
cost 3c a pound and a dozen eggs cost 15c.
"It took a whole batch of pigs (approxi-
mately 10) to buy my dining room suite,"
she says.
Farming near Walton for 26 years on a
180 acre mixed farm, the Reids did a lot of
hard manual work.
"We used to do 11/2hours of work before
breakfast and the same after supper. On
Sunday night, we'd sit for a couple of hours
cleaning eggs."
Before much machinery was used on the
farmit took n0 mt•n to fill the silo After th,
Reids bought a binder, the number went
down to 10.
As well as making butter and selling eggs
and cream, Annie looked after the pigs,
cows and chickens and drove the tractor
once in a while.
In 1959, the Reids retired from farming
and moved into Walton. Nelson then
worked trucking gravel and building roads
for the county. One road he worked on was
the road from Seaforth' to Walton. Annie
continued to work with the church choir, the
UCW and the Women's Institute.
"We've always been blessed with gogd
health. Even my arthritis doesn't stop me
too much," says Annie.
The Reids celebrated with an open house
and dinner at the Walton United Church on
June 17 (although their anniversary is
today, June 22) with their nieces and
nephews and Nelson's, two sisters.
