AI least five meetings were held between the village council and representatives of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority in the past two weeks. Final details and cost to the village will be finalized this week. Council and the authority felt initial estimates, reported at the end of March were high. Ther $175,000 cost to construct one spillway has been reduced to an estimated $138,325 to construct two new spillways. This does not include a super- visor's salary or the costs of engineer reports. • -- A report by the DelCan engineering firm on May 19 estimated construction cost for a double spillway of .approximately $200,000. Two construction firms were asked for their opinion. Looby Construction estimated costs at $140,000. "This is a bare bones estimate,"said Brian Howard, MVCA tepre- sentativ.. "Including construction i of the island, the total will be approxiamtely 5225,000. Added to this would be design and supervision expenses. It is close to the engineer's estimate." The Looby estimate allowed 60 per cent manual labor for the project or 304 man weeks- rojec ould - employ 14 Taborer Con -time allowed for the spillw s is 25 weeks. "The old dam is better built than we expected. It will take longer to dismantle than estimated," Mr. Howard said. "We will have to break up the thing with air hammers and transport the material by wheel barrow to fill the island." DEMOLITION Demolition of the section closest to the old mill is expected to take 12 men, eight weeks. It will take another five mien, one week to build a cofferdam and a second week for six men to clean the base. "The bedrock conditions are better than first anticipated. That is the Reason for lower costs." The balance of the crumbling structure will be patched to retain a rustic appearance and keep costs to a minimum. Fill for the proposed island will take 4.000 yards of fieldstone and old barn foundations. GOOD NEWS "The good news is that 60 per cent of the project will involve labor and 40 per cent, material. The first -part (double spillway) looks encouraging. The village would be responsible for surpervisory costs and a bit of equipment rental." The village and authority ere working under a time constraint. Deadline for applications have been extended one week, Mr. Howard said. "We're under the gun to send a letter or application in for grants. Figures for the total cost cannot be finalized, but it !beks hopeful." "Are we committed once we send the application in," asked, councillor Jerry Wheeler. "I would think we are committed now. We've put a lot of work into it," said Bruce McCall: Mr. McCall is the village represent- ative to the MVCA. "So far, the way it's gone, it looks like we have to come up with 540,000 to 560,000," said councillor Gordon Workman. "The whole thing is, if we're going to do it, let's do it." said councillor Wheeler. Short Shots by Evelyn Kennedy If you can keep cool, your temper under control, when others lose theirs, you can control the situation. The leadership convention is over. Gone is the tense mental strain, and back -room strategy of the last few hours. The Progres- sive Conservative Party of Canada has a new leader. Brian Mulroney, the Montreal businessman with no parliamentary experi- ence, is the national leader of the Tories. The speeches. there is no doubt that any of the candidates could possibly live up to all the promises theymade as to what they would do for Canada. The hull-abaloo in the convention hall' in'the,-late hours reminded one of a carnival .scene. Plastered with posters the place was filled with screaming people bobbing up and down in a frenzy waving name signs, music blaring, groups weaving around dancing and singing. Huddled in small groups, men, mopping their dripping brows, held serious discussions. After the announcement of the elected leader Joe Clark, who Inst to Mulroney on the fourth (final) ballot, spoke briefly, with honour and dignity, expressing sincere congratulations to Brian Mulroney and his full fledged support. As he spoke T.V. cameras picked up Clark supporters, men and women, openly weeping in sympathy for Joe. In speaking Mulroney paid tribute to Clark for his devotion ttiCanatla and to party and said his abilities must continue o work within the party. Schneiders 175 gr.
