The Huron Expositor, 1983-06-01, Page 4411.4 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR, JUNE 1, 1983 DQ 1blOn and amcl Arts classes popular The lack of an arts program at St. Marys DCVI is being studied by the Perth Board of Education. An increasing number of students are now attending Stratford schools cutting enrolment at St. Marys. The problem started in 1981 after the boys' basic level program at DCVI was terminated because of a low number of students. The basic level students from St. Marys were transferred to Stratford. Academic students then requested to attend Stratford schools for such subjects as art, music, theatre arts and German. In the 1981-82 school year five students requested such a transfer and in 1982:83 the number rose to 21. For the coming year it was estimated that between 34 and 46 students would be leaving St. Marys to attend school in Stratford. Adam Stecher, superintendent of schools, said that number has been reduced to 24 to 28 students. Of these 11 are grade nine students, three are grade ten students and the rest are scattered in the remaining grades. Trustee Peter Black said part of the reason for the decline in the figure is because parents have become aware of the board study and are waiting to see the outcome. While the lack of an arts program has resulted in a Toss of enrolment at DCVI, the school now taces another problem. As of Visit in Correspondent MRS. H. Amanda Kathleen Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. McKillop September 1984, stUdents entering grade nine must obtain at least one credit in an arts program - art, music or theatre arts - in order to receive a secondary school graduation diploma. Mr. Stecher said the program credits have to be in place by December to enable students to register for September of 1983. The study to be undertaken by the superintendent of schools and DCVI principal Eldon Alderson will include consideration of: -Arts courses being introduced into the school; -the feasibility of returning the boys' basic level program to DCVI; -The effect of present bussing practices on the school programs. "We intend to involve the public," said Mr. Stecher. There is a group of parents in St. Marys ,who are pursuing the problem, he said. Mr. Black asked if any consideration would be given to realigning thebussing boundaries between St. Marys and Mitchell. The superintendent of schools said that would be taken into consideration. Stratford trustee Paul Parlee asked if students are withdrawn, if the effect on the programs offered in Stratford secondary schools would be considered. "We are conscious of that concern," Mr. Stecher said. Brodhagen Warren Young of Monkton was baptized on Sunday morning in St. Peter's Luth- eran Church, Brodhagen.
