Helen Irving, Layton judges poems One of Canada's most distinguished poets and a novelist from Stratford will judge the 19$3 Dorothy Shoe- maker Literary Awards Con- test, originally a Centennial project of the Kitchener Pub- lic Library. and named in honor of its former chief librarian. Poet Irving Layton will judge the poetry entries, and author Nella Benson will select the prose winners. Entry forms for the contest are available at participating public libraries in Welling- ton. Perth, and Huron coun- ties, and the Region of Waterloo. The deadline for entries is Oct. , 1, and the awards ceremony, at which it is expected the judges will be present, will be held Friday. Nov. 25 at the Stratford City Hall. 1* is a member of the Hensall 4-H Cooking Travellers. Eleven girls received their silver spoons having success- fully completed their course on Ontario's Heritage. The U.C.W. of Hensall United Church sponsored the group REBEKAH'S DRAPE CHARTER Noble Grand Mrs. Marg- aret Consittresided for the meeting of Amber Rebekah Lodge on Wednesday eve- ning assisted by Vice Grand Mrs. Margaret Upshall. The Charter was draped in mem- ory of the late Brother Archie Parsons. Mr. Charles Mickle of Hamilton visited over the holiday with his mother Mrs. Laird Mickle. Hensall and District Early Childhood Learning Centre, in Hensall Community Centre pupils and their teacher, Mrs. Ruth Ashton entertained their grandmothers on Thurs- day afternoon giving them an insight to the training each receives and the work they complete. Their teacher Mrs. Ashton will be leaving this term and is being replaced by Debbie Denomme of Zurich. Hensall United's anniver- sary service will be held on May 29 at 11:00 a.m. when Rev. Grant McDonald of Kitchener will be guest mini- ster. Special music will be given by the quartette from Centralia. Twenty-eight girls from the Explorers of Hensall United Church camped at the,Pinery PECK APPLIANCES on Saturday with their lead- ers Kathy Munn, Shirley McAllister, assisted by Margaret Cole and Doprothy Brintnell. Thanks to IGolun- teer leaders, mothers and drivers for help. In the afternoon Betty Beer arrived with her guitar and entertain- ed the girls with music and songs. On Saturday Mrs. Minnie Noakes was present at the opening of the Bluewater Survival Adventures south of Grand Bend. This games concession is being operated by Dan Alton and his part- ners. Dan is the young man who crossed Canada in a wheelchair in an attempt' to raise funds for wheel chair athletes. He is attending classes at the University of Western Ontario during the summer months, having coma pleted the year of regular studies there. Dan has never allowed himself time for self-pity but rather is contin- uously working for his friends and team mates. Minnie presented Dan with a "Bucket of Cash" which had been collected in Wil- liam's Hairstyling Shop. The bucket had been placed there by Minnie several months ago and when the amount teached in excess of 540.. Bill Gibson matched the amount with a cheque for the wheel chair athletes. Dan thanked Minnie and Bill Gibson, for kindness, thanks also to all who donated any amount to the bucket. The Christian Develop- ment Committee of the Uni- ted Church met on Tuesday evening when final plans were made for the Vacation Bible School which will be held from June 27 to July 1 in the United Church. Leaders are needed for the school and ladies unable to help with the school can send cookies for the morning snack. The com- mittee also made plans for the groups in the fall, Nursery. Messengers. Explorers. C.G.I.T, Junior High as well as Couples Club. STUDENTS OF THE Hensall nursery school had a ball Thursday when they were treated to a visit from their grandparents. Following refreshments, the kids proudly displayed their learning skills while prouder grandparents observed.
