"Do married people live longer than single?" asks the American joker, and the answer comes back quick: "No, it only seems longer!" This is not the tree answer, and the following may be accepted as theresult of serious investigation into the question of longevity. Married people live long - or than the unmarried, the temperate and industrious longer than the glutton- ous and idle, and civilized nations longer, than the unoivilized. Tall persons enjoy a greater longevity than small ones. Women have a more favorable chance of life before reaching their fiftieth year than men, but a less favorable one after that period. The average duration of life is 33 years. One-fourth of the population of the earth dies before st- aining the seventeenth year, Of a thousand persons, only one roaches the age of a hundred years, and no more than six that of 65 years.
