No dirty tricks as. Perth PCs elect
The Perth PC riding
association elected its dele-
gates to the June leadership
convention without the so-
called "dirty tricks"experi-
enced in other ridings.
"Perth County is a .re-
spectable county," Perth rid-
ing asfociation president
Vincent Judge of Listowel
told the ,over 160,, party
faithfuls in attendance at the
Stratford Coliseum on Satur-
dd7 here was no influx of new
members prior to the meeting
and "the people here arc
long-time members" com-
mented Mr. Judge.
As president of the local
riding Mr. Judge was chosen
as one bf 'the delegates to
attend the Ottawa conv.en•
tion. He commented that
interest in the party has
grown since the Winnipeg
leadership review, but he
hasn't liked what he has seen
happening in some ridings
across thctountry.
There is interest in the
upcoming convention at the
local level as evidenced by the
large crowd in attendance.
Some party members said it
was the largest delegate -
choosing meeting they have
seen.
Once those assembled
voted to send Mr. Judge to
the convention, the election
of the remaining thred senior
delegates was held. Stratford
Alderman and former PC
provincial candidate Colleen
Misener, Stratford lawyer
and, past riding presidegt
John Stratton and Perth rid-
ing association secretary
Nina Carey of Stratford were
chosen out of 11 nominees as
the other delegates.
Mrs. Carey was the only
dclegatti that gave an indica-
tion as to whom she will be
voting for at the convention.
She commented that she
supported Joe Clark in Win-
nipeg, and will watch what
happens in June.
"1'm going to observe and
hopefully follow through and
vote for Mr. Clark;" said
Mrs. Carey.
The other delegates said
they made no decision and

Misener said she hopes the
candidates visit the Perth
riding to enable her to ask
questions. She said it will be
easier to base her decision on
these visits rather than justify
listening to speeches in Otta-
wa.
Mr. Stratton, while he said
he wouldn't divulge the
names of five candidates he
could be happy with, said he
definitely wouldn't be voting
for Brian Mulroney, Peter
Pocklington or John Camp-
bell.
The two junior delegates
elected by the Perth Young
Progressive Conservatives
(YPC) were Clark Stratton of
Stratford and Craig Sander-
son of Listowel.
The alternate senior dele-
gates are the president of the

tion Vivian Robinson of Strat•

Math can be f
Rcmemb'er the drudgery of
mathematics - the monotony
of reciting all those ntultipli
cation facts, attempting to
understand algebra or trying
skillfully to use a compass
point to makasomegeometric
shape and avoiding stabbing
a finger or arm?
Well math can be fun and if
you listen to Perth County
Board of Education math
. implementation leader Gerry
Krug, the subject is fascinat-
ing.
The Board of Education
trustees experienced this first
hand as they maneuvered red
plastic miras (capital letter
I -shaped) around geometric
shapes. learned. how to add
and multiply on their fingers
and were shown how . to
compute programs on calcu-
lators.
Mr. Krug's presentation to
the board was a progress
report on his position' which
he has filled since last fall.
The one-year position is simi•
lar to that of math consultant
which superintendent of pro-
gram Keith Thompson im-
plied would be a position
recommended to the board in
the future.

Up to 10 trustees
will atter attend
The Perth County Board
of Education met on April 19
and dealt with the following
matters briefly:
Authorized the attendance
of up to 10 trustees and
director of education Paul
Sherratt to the 15th annual
meeting and convention of
the Ontario Public School
Trustees' Association from
.lune .1 to in Toronto. It will
cost about 5325.16 per dele-
gate which includes 5140 for
registration, 5112 for two
nights accommodation, addi-
tional meals and mileage.
Trustees' spouses may attend
the convention at an addi-
tional east of $75 which is not
covered by the Board.

leader demonstrated how the
mires could be used in a
similar fashion to the com-
pass in geometry. While
students are "playing" with
the instrument they are also
learning symmetry . —.the
relation of one half of an
object to the other - and
other geometry facts.
"They have been in the
schools. but because the
teachers didn't feel clonffort-
able with them they weren't
used," commented Mr.
Krug.
As for using lingers in
mathematics. Mr. Krug re-
called that in the past hands
have been slapped for such
action. He has used the hand
calculation method to assist
students having difficulty in
math.
Each trustee received a
calculator for the evening's
exercise with Mr. Krug de-
monstrating how on some
conrputers numbers upside
down resemble letters. Stu-
dents can then program the
calculator by determining a
word they want to end up as
the answer to a riddle and
expert
achiev-e that answer by a
series of mathematical equa-
tions.
Mr. 'Krug has prepared kits
of geometric shapes and from
Septenibei to December of
last year sent out 150,4 these -• •
kits of Perth County schools.
The cost of the kits • nothing •
as thc material was obtained
from local industries. Rubber
hoses which would have end-
ed nu in the trash and pieces
of material (geometric shap-
es) used in such industries as
luggage -making are exam-
ples of items that have ended
up in these "kits".
The math implementation
leader has also been involved
in the development of an
intermediate mathematics
program. Using the Lambton
County Board of Education's. '
math program as a guide. die– /
grade seven and eight math
program for Perth County
schools was approved by the
board at this meeting. This
new pfogram places more
emphasis on geometry and
encompasses the metric sy-
stem as the present math
program is pre -metric.
