The meeii was held in Ethel April 7. The final decision t the meeting was to hold a special meeting, ea ly this week, to discuss the proposed rebate tax system for rural property owners. A volunteer task force, organized as a result of last month's meeting, to examine the 100 per cent rebate, disclosed results of a special meeting held last Tuesday. President of the federation. Tony McQuail, asked Bill EMOTIONS WERE HIGH at the monthly meeting of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture meeting in Ethel Thursday, Discussion was held concerning the proposed 100 per cent farm land and outbuildings tax rebate, Approximately 200 attended. A special meeting will be held this Thursday In Clinton to further discuss the rebate proposal. Jim McIntosh, centre, a director of the Huron federation and George Underwood, left, a volunteer on the Huron task force examining the proposal, spoke briefly at the meeting. Opposition to the tax rebate was high as several visitors voiced their concerns. (Wassink photo), CARLTON CLUB CANNEDPOP rebate discussion Trick, secretary of the committee, to present a report. Before the report could be presented, Clete Dalton interjected. asking why the Huron federation's motion to oppose the 100 per cent rebate passed at the Mar. 3 meeting, was not presented at a recent Ontario federation directors' meeting. Mr. McQuail explained there was nothing in the resolution ordering the federation to bring it forward at the provincial level. He noted the question was raised by other county federations. Admitting she was not a member of the federation. Alice Burt stated "this same subject was discussed five years ago by the federation. Then they were in opposition and now they are supporting the tax rebate. All the people I have talked to are opposed to a 100 per cent tax rebate." RESTRAINED As the hostility was restrained. Mr. Trick explained the first formal meeting of the volunteer task force was held April 5 with Jim Armstrong. RR4, Wingham, acclaimed chairman. Five of the eight members attended. "We discussed the mandate given the committee as defined in the resolution. We felt time is of the essence. The 100 per cent rebate issue requires indepth research." He Noted if opposition is voiced, it must be done soon because of the advanced stage of the legislation. We have reviewed the integrity of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and maintain that the present stature of the organization must be stressed." Mr. Trick listed several groups opposed to the proposed legislation, including: Peel Federation of Agriculture; Huron County Council; Bruce County Council; Grey Federation of Agricul- ture; and the Simcoe kederation of Agricul- ture. The Halton Federation and Essex Federation are reviewing the proposal. "1t was due to the urgency of the matter that aur committee approved that a report be given tonight. We/are requesting a review for alternatives to the program,'; explained Mr. Trick. "We must move quickly or no alternatives will remain. If directed, a resolution will be sent to the O.F.A. meeting in Toronto on April 20." The proposed rebate system gives rural landowners the opportunity to apply for a 100 per cent tax rebate on farm land and outbuilding taxes. Owners will pay 100 per cent taxes on their residence and an imaginary lot. Mr. Trick felt the program requires refinement and discussion. "The policy of the program is only outlined in a small booklet." Mr. McQuail announced he had discussed the issue with the committee. "It is a concern of the federation. There has not been a general meeting called to discuss the rebate proposal. In the interest of gathering more information and offering the ,committee to meet again before the April 20 O.F.A. directors' meeting in Toronto, it would be valuable to hold a general meeting in Huron County to discuss the 100 per cent rebate proposal." INSIGHT "The committee will have the opportunity to gain insightto various viewpoints and gather additional information," explained Mr. McQuail. "I propose April 19 as the date for the special meeting to deal with the topic. Holding a meeting was agreeable to the -committee." He felt the special meeting justified "the fairness to the county federa- Please turn to page 15 fCOia •Orange •Root Beer *Ginger Ale Reg. 99 case of 24 tins Linda and Barb hold a 50 Ib.
