March is half over and I am
sure .1 need not tell you what
special day is on March 17 -
sure 'tis St. Patrick's Day.
'Tis the day the eyes of the
Irish Colleens sparkle like
emeralds as they dance a wee
jig with their fair Danny boy,
Bing Crosby used to hring to
life those little Irish ditties as
he crooned the nights away.
The Irish have a style of music
all their own with its light and
lively lyric and melody.
The wearing of the green is
truly a must by the Irish and it
is also donned by those who
are Irish at heart.
When one thinks of St,
Patrick's Day; one cannot
leave out such important
I
items as the shillelagh. the
shamrock, and of course the
leprechauns and the well
wore out jokes about the two
Irishmen, Pat and Mike.
Dublin perhaps is a. bit
partial to this special day,
what with their Separate
School and Roman Catholic
Church both called St. Pat-
rick's. 1f by chance you have
seen the advertising for the
Wintario tickets you will also
note that the Dublin sign on
the outskirts of the village
even made it on to the T.V.
screen.
Oh how lovely it would be
to travel to Ireland to see their
lair cities, to taste Mrs:
Murphy's chowder and walk
abotqytt the gardens where the
prafties grow. To visit the
pubs and listen to their
laughter aqd lovely Irish
brogue. But enough of the
blarney for this week as by
now you will have figured out
that when it comes to cele-
brating St: Patrick's Day --
sure why 1 like it too.

This past week Dublin said
goodbye to a fine gentleman
who 'was in the butcher
business for 17 years in
Dublin with his partner Char-
les Friend. Andrew George
Austin Whetham was born in
Acton on October 29, 1906
and as a teenager, learned
the butchering trade from his
father in their Burlington
butcher shop. In 1938, Andy
married Melba Ruth Jordison
and they lived in South
Porcupine where he was a
butcher.
In 1941 he enlisted in the
Air Force where he received
his training as an air gunner
at Summerside, P.E.I. where
he was made a pilot officer.
After the war he settled in
London. Ontario until 1946
when he and his brother-in-
law Charles Friend bought
the butcher shop business,
slaughter house and resi-
dence on Union Street from
Gerald Holland, and later on
they purchased the store from
Toni Molineaux where they
established a butcher shop
in the front and a locker
storage facility in the hack.
This building is now owned
by George Goettler and
houses the G.G. Goettler
Furniture showroom and
store. The Friend and -Whet-
ham Butcher Shop was a well
known and prosperous busi-
ness for many years.
In 1963, Andy became ill
and had to retire from the
