Ted Leeming to his dosin* version of the same song, it was obvious that the Seaforth Agricultural So- ciety's production of The Fantasticks was a smooth. and professional musical. And a community musical. The cast of eight was backed up' an orchestra and a p uction crew whose names took up half of the 81/2 inch by II inch program. Producer Bruce Whitmore, director Marie McGavin and music and choreography dir- ector Margaret Whitmore molded their amateur cast into a polished unit. The orchestra was superb. Highlights included a sword fight between the boy, Matt, played by Roger Leon- hardt and other cast mem- bers and fine soft shoe routines by the two fathers, David McKnight as Huckle- bee and Don McDonald as Bellamy. Th.- two also excelled in their gardening scenes and In a funny song that spoke to every parent in the audience, entitled Never Say No, about the child phsycology dictum that if you tell a kid no, he'll do exactly what you don't want. (The fathers secretly encouraged a romance bet- ween their children by for- bidding it.) Lucille Delaney showed off her fine singing voice and a star quality stage prescence as the other romantic lead, Luisa. Ted Leeming as El Gallo was a suitably swash- buckling and cynical narra- tor. Jim Thompson as the old actor and David Campbell as the Indian provided comic relief. Patricia Rimmer as the mute, kept the action moving along and contributed to"the fine performance without saying a word. Both night's performances were sold out as the audience packed the hall of the new Seaforth and District Com- munity Centres. We owe Frank Phillips a vote of thanks for his many hours of work and planning for these displays. The guests staved for a couple of hours before boarding the bus for home and hoped we will return the visit in the near future. The stag cuchres are still proving popular in the branch with ten tables in play last Wednesday evening. The final stag, our sports ir- man says will be W . Mar. 23 and April 9 is he final mixed euchre. We will have more on that at later date. Another reminder from our President Peter Malcolm, the monthly meeting of the branch will be held this Thursday March 17 at 8 p.m. Please try to attend. The branch was saddened on the weekend to learn of the cially estimates at $2,500., go to the agricultural society and will be part of the group's arena contribution. Hundreds of rehearsal hours and the successful performances were celebrat- ed at u cast party Friday night. About 110 attended and enjoyed themselves until after 2 a.m. And the answer to the question everyone in the audience had 'will they do another play next year?" is a definite maybe. Mr. Whit- more, a teacher at Mitchell and District High School, is committed to producing a musical th 're next winter. 'That doesn' i some• body else•coul n't take it on (another production in Sea - forth)", he said with a smile.
