Short Shots by Evelyn Kennedy
When we suffer disappointment, sor-
row or fail to achieve a goal we have set for
ourselves, we should not let ourselves sink
into a pit of despondency or wallow in
self-pity. What we must do is pick ourselves
up and go on.
The supposition that our U.S. friends have
no use for Royalty is a big haw-haw. On the
recent visit of our Queen and Prince Philip to
California some folks there were offering
bribes to get "even a peek" at the Queen.
Nurnerous ceremonies were held in their
honour, V.1.P's and film stars were begging
for tickets to various functions. Thousands of
people lined the streets to give a royal
welcome to the couple'. A San Francisco flag
company reported early last week that
already they had sold 9,000 Union Jacks, one
large one for $1,500. Women were causing
milliners problems insisting on elaborate
hats and white gloves to meet the Queen
(both unnecessary). A group of dissidents
were prepared to stage demonstrations while
the Royal couple and President and Mrs.
Reagan were in San Francisco. They were
protestingthe U.S. nuclear arms policy and
the pre. nee of British forces in Northern
Ireland. All this does not suggest there is no
interest or respect for Royalty in the U.S. 1t
also generates the • suspicion that many of
them secretly envy us our Royal family.

Here arc sonic words of wisdom uttered by
Cicero (106-43 B.C. ), much of which would be
well to heed in these times. "The budget
should be balanced, the treasury should be
refilled. public debt should be reduced, the
arrogance of officialdom should be tempered
and controlled, and assistance to foreign
lands should be reduced Zest the state become
bankrupt. The people should work and not
depend on government for subsistence.

The former provincial secretary of Wo-
men's Institute said recently "If they
(institute members) don't change with the
times, then we will all die off and so will the
institute." She also told at a conference that
the institute isn't gaining young members
because its activities aren't relevant in these
times of financial and social stress. The
Brussels Majestic W.I. faces these problems.
They need new young members to survive in
the future. They must also recognize the
changing needs of the 1980s. There will be a
warm welcome at the Majestic Institute for
young rural women and a sincere effort to
respond to the needs of modern farm women.
Come join the Majestic W.I. now.

What a pleasure it was to watch on T.V.
Saturday night, part 1 of the musical drama
"Fiddler on the Roof." Produced and
directed by Norman Jewison it was appreci-
ated to have such a fine movie for
entertainment instead of the nonsensical
stuff we are too often offered on the T.V.
screen. The conclusion was Monday night.
This probably caused a problem for some
viewers \(or the final performance of the
popular M:(1.S.H. series was also aired at
that time. \
It is common these days to see what
appeared to be happy marriages break up. Is
it because young people mistake infatuation,
or mere sexual attraction, for love? Is it
because they are all too eager to get away
from parental influence and see marriage as
an escape from it? Whatever the cause to see
it happen saddens one.

The winning streak of the Toronto Maple
Leafs came to an end on Saturday night. After
their sixth straight victory Friday night, with
the brilliant performance of Mike Palmater in
the Leaf net; they lost their Saturday night
game. Come on Leafs this is not the time to go
into a slump.

There is a bad habit of the males of the
human race that they should give some
attention to. A lady finds it a necessity to go to
the bathroom in the night. Half -asleep she
gropes her way, in the dark, not wanting to
disturb other sleepers. She gets a nasty cold
shock when she finds herself sinking down,
sitting on the cold hard rim of the facility
instead of the seat that some thoughtless
orale had neglected to replace to where it
belonged. Think of a cute little girl rushing
into the bathroom in urgency and finds her
knees scrunched up under her chin and her
warns little bottom in cold water. Have a heart
guys., Put that seat down where it should be.
