The Huron Expositor, 1983-02-23, Page 9NEW CO-OP EXECUTIVE—Elected at Seaforth Farmers' Co-op annual meeting last week were, from left, secretary Don McKercher, vice-president Mac Stewart and Gerry Van Den Hengel, president. • (Phdto by White) Co-op sales improve Sales at an all time high of $3.4 million, and a bottom line in an improved position over last year, Have been reported for the Seaforth Farmers Co-op in 1982. Directors are launching a sales drive to increase members' business at the co-op, and improve the financial picture in 1983. A $I million increase in sales would put the member owned business in the black next year, says incoming president Gerry Van Den Hengel. He replaces retiring president, Bill Wallace. The co-op had a loss of $66,000 in I982, an improvement from 1981 when the loss was $182,000. Accounts receivable are in an excellent position. directors reported to the co-op's annual meeting last Wednesday at the Legion, Abigger turnout than usual 126 people, perhaps 85 per cent of them members. were optimistic about the co-op's future and "seemed to want 10 give the co-op Corn producers seeks area mei additional support to keep the services it offers," says vice-president. Mac Stewart. "Members didn't want to see it close down," Mr. Van Den Hengel says. Members asked what co-op division accounts for most of the loss. There is no one area, .the president says, all co-op services contribute. The 1982 increase in sales was for fertilizer. feed and store items, according to the directors. Donald McKer- cher. secretary, says the co-op, which stared in 1942, generates a lot of farm business for Seaforth. • "Directors were pleased with the turnout and the way the meeting went," Mr. Van Den Hengel says. Larry Dillon was elected a new director and he joins Gerben Wynja, Toni Melady, Francis Hicknell and the executive on the board. The co-op has more than 200 active members who do a minimum of $500 in business there each year. Members are being sought for the newly formed Ontario Corn Producers' Association. One of the association's interim board members. John Cunningham of Kent Bridge, said he hoped to convince corn producers to join the organization., He was speak- ing at the Perth Federation of Agriculture's annual meeting held as part of Perth's Ag. Week in Stratford. The association was ap- proved by order in -council at the end of last year after receiving strong support from corn producers across the province. The idea of the association began. under the sponsorship of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, in response to high interest rates and low commodity prices that were forcing pro- ducers out of business. Mr. Cunningham said the association will speak on behalf of corn producers in the province. The association anticipates working in the areas of providing market and trade information, market group bers • for payments of premium grades and bringing advance payments to corn producers. Mr. Cunningham said that over the next few weeks he will be speaking at meetings, such as the Perth meeting, to inform producers of the asso- ciation. The association, he said, will be run by a board of 15 iirectors that will be elected by members from 10 regions across the province. Perth is in region eight. along with the counties of Huron and Bruce. Corn producers who take out memberships will have a regional meeting by March 15, at which time they will elect directors. (Region eight will have two directors.) Six delegates will also be elected at that meeting. "If we're going to be effective, -we have to have something before the 1983 crops come off," stated Mr. Cunningham. About 12 corn producers from Perth signed up for membership in the associa- tion following the meeting. developmerft, proyiding Mr. Cunningham noted that greater competition for hand- 10 producers from Bruce ling and. drying charges, County had signed up the day developing grade standards before. • Hullett gives grants At .a ;special meeting of Hullett Township Council on Feb. 19, council gave a total of $850 in grants towards various organizations. .The,council gave a grant of $250 each to the Blyth Centre for the Arts, the Seaforth Agricultural Society and the Central Huron Agricultural THE HURON EXPOSITOR, FEBRUARY 23, 1983 — A9 FLOOR COVERING RED TAG SALE DRYWALL KNOWN FOR HIGH QUALITY Peter Bakos Drywall COMPLETE DRYWALL SERVICE 527-1398 6' CANDIDE & SUNDIAL from E995 sq. yd.
