Sewers still (not hooked up
Approximately 25 sewer connections re-
main to be completed, Brussels council
members were told last Monday evening.
Reeve Cal Krauter admitted, "mine at the
shop isn't hooked up and 1 don't intend to
connect the line if 1 can sell the place."
The Huron County Health Unit suggested a
letter be sent to deliquent homeowners. The
letter would cite a by-law which requested
connections to have been completed by Sept.
1, 1982.
Clerk Bill King said all residents are being
charged a sewer rate, but if some are not
connected, they are contravening the bylaw.
He said if a letter was written, the health unit
had suggested a follow-up registered letter
be sent in the spring.
"1 still think it's up to the health unit", said
councillor Gordon Workman. "There are
people not hooked up who are going to give us
trouble. The health unit can put in an order to
unhook water if an owner does not comply."
Reeve Krauter felt there "is no excuse for
people to have a septic tank with sludge from
the'tank running on top of the ground when a
sewer line was Installed along their proper-
ty." He suggested council meet with the
health unit to discuss the situation before a
letter is sent. 'I don't care if you send a letter
or don't send one."
Letters can be sent asking connections be
made, "but how are you going to enforce it
now?" asked councillor Workman.
Councillor Betty Graber felt the timing
wasn't right for sending letters. ;'I'm not
sticking my neck out now."
In part, the bylaw states connection must
be made within one year of the operation of
the sewage treatment plant. A fine of not
more than $1,000 can be levied for each
offence.
Council decided thesuggestion by the
health unit be discussed at the March
meeting.
A tax rebate of 523.74 was approved for
Doris McDonald who had a garage taken
down on her property. Reeve. Krauter asked
"Did she have a demolition permit?"
Accounts payable of 515.300 were ap-
proved.
Council approved a building permit to
Bruce and Carol Hasetgrove for new siding on
their home.
The property chairman informed council
the fireball requires a new walk-in door. "The
old door is done."
A $10 grant will be given to the Huron
County Historical Society, who, as in past
years, requested support from county muni-
cipalities.
