Council holds wage
hikes to six per cent
BY RON WASSINK
Brussels council toed provincial and
federal guidelines by holding wages for
village employees under six per cent. At their
regular meeting, Monday, January 4, council
held their yearly salaries at the 1982 level.
Reeve Cal Krauter will receive $1,400 and
each councillor will remain at $,1,100.
Reeve Krauter informed council, "provin-
cial officials tell us, public servants are only to
receive five per cent wage increases. At this
time, with the present economic situation, we
have to watch our spending. But interest
rates and inflation is coming down, which is
an optimistic sign."
Agreeing, councillor Hank Ten Pas said,
"that's okay but then eJerybody has to take a
cut. What's the view of the P.U.C.
concerning wages?"
The reeve said it was something he would
like to check with P.U.C. commissioners. He
added that P.U.C. pays 60 per cent of
employee wages while the village is respon-
sible for 40 per cent.
Clerk -treasurer William King will receive
less than six per cent wage hike of $1,000 over
1982 from $18,200 to $19,200. Assistant
clerk, Ruth Sauve received an increase of 35
cents per hour from $6.30 in 1982 to $6.65 for
1983. In addition to agreeing on wage hikes,
council approved nine statutory holidays for
employees.
General Utility Manager, David Hastings
will be paid $8.00 per hour up from $7.60 last
year. Village employee. John Pipe will
receive an increase from $6.80 to $7.25.
Fire Chief, Howard Bernatd was. reap-
pointed to his position. In 1982, the chief
received a $300 honorarium. His total wages
for 1982, including fire time and honourarium
was $575. If the five' per cent guideline was
followed, the honourarium would increase
$15.
' "Percentages are no bloody good", ex-
claimed councillor Workman.
"has not fair", agreed councillor Ten Pas.
Councillor Gerry Wheeler said, "If we are
only going to give the fire chief an additional
$15, then 1. feel we shouldn't give any
Increase. He has a great deal of responsibil-
ity. 1 can see giving him an extra $50, but not
S15,"
Noting that council was attempting to trim
the budget, councillor Workman said, "if we
give everybody five per cent, then give five
per cent."
Councillor Betty.Graber said honorariums.
are given iirt, addition to wages and felt fire
department wages should increase five per,
cent, but honorariums should remain at the
1982 level. The present wage scale for
firemen is $6.50 per hour for meetings and
$7.50 per hour, fire fighting time, -
Council agreed with councillor Ten Pas'
suggestion of "leaving the meeting time the
same, but raising fire fighting time because
its worth more. ' Fire fighting wagcs will
increase from 57.50 per•hourto $7.90. Clerk
Bill King indicated the fire department,
"gave themselves big increases last year."
The casual labour rate was held to 55.00
per hour. "That's one that I'm not going to
budge on", said councillor Workman. ,
COUNCIL BRIEFS
In other news. council was informed that
the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority
has agreed to accept an engineering
assessment of $2,378 by Deleon Consulting
Engineers and Planners. concerning the
Brussels Dam. '
10
The L.C.B.O. has paid 5570.75 for their
share of repairing the sidewalk in front of
their location.
Missing items including a hammer and two
paint rollers from the fireball has resulted in
fire chief, Howard Bernard requesting new
locks be installed on firehall doors. It is not
known who holds keys to the hall.
Councillor Workman said nothing would be
gained if all firemen and others receive keys.
The only problem is with the fire depart-
ment", said councillor Wheeler. Ruth Sauve
mentioned that recently. "four firemen have
had additional keys made."
A $300 donation was received from Russel
Fox to be used for capital expenditures for the
fire department. The money will be used to
purchase new gloves for the firemen.
Council adjourned at 4:30 p.m. The next
regular meeting is scheduled for Monday.
