EDITORIAL
NEW YEAR'S
RESOLUTIONS
Now that we are into a
brand new year you hear
people mentioning some-
thing about New Year's reso-
lutions.
The usual resolutions
range from saving money to
losing weight.
Our faithful ole 1014 M^d-
ern English dictionary at
home states p resolution is
fixed determination; con-
stancy of purpose.
Well, I don't know about
you but 1 find it difficult to
stick to my resolutions. The
first one l can remember
making said 1 would get along
better with my brothers; well °
you can just imagine how that
one turned out. The next I
think was about weight. That
good old faithful one which I
still haven't completed, but at
least 1 didn't gaits any. And of
course 1 had others but I can't
remember them all.
1 guess that's not really
being fair but near the end of
the year you tend to forget or
• say well just one won't hurt or
think I'll be better tomorrow.
Resolutions are good. If we
didn't make them we
wouldn't have anything to
restrict us. We can always
help other people keep
theirs. But the best thing to
do would be to make one and
do your best always to fulfill
it.

Lately, a lot of people have
been severely bothered by
the weather that we exper-
ienced over Christmas. Ski -
Waiting dor those storms
As' you have probably
noticed there is something
very different about this new
year. When we look out our
classroom window. expecting
;yvifld blown snowflakes and
'inountainsofsnow, all we see
instead, is the bare autumn
ground.
To adults this is great. No
shovelling out laneways, get-
ting stuck in the snow,
driving in the treacherous
weather and the cold feet and
hands that come with it.
It seems Mother Nature
has tricked us into believing
that winter will not come. But
when we step outside into the
cool, crisp air we soon realize
that winter is just around the
corner. Somehow winter just
isn't the same without skiing,
snowmobiling, tobogganing
and those winter storms that
close the area schools.
I'm sure every student
dreams of the day when they
wake up to hear the voice of
the announcer on the radio
exclaim "Sorry, no United
Trails buses running today
and SDHS is closed."

S.D.H.S. CHRISTMAS
ASSEMBLY .
On December 20, SDHS
held their annual Christmas
assembly. This assembly
gives struggling. young per-
formers of the arts, a chance
to let their hidden talents
shine.
One highlight of the show,
was a visit from "Santa
Hoegy Claus"; who took
many teachers aside to tell
them why- Santa Hoegy
wasn't going to leave them
any presents under their
Christmas trees this year. He
also had some interesting
suggestions, as to what they
needed to do to be good boys
rhP fnllnwino vear.
Other highlights were such
skits as: Suicide, Twas the
night before.,., and also the
infamous "How Gargamel
Almost Stole the Smurfs
Xmas'. . -.
Later on, to help finish our
assembly 'Santa' made his:
appearance, and presented
our lovely secretaries and
also 'to the hard-working
custodians with gifts.
For the "grand finale".
Lucille and Jayne Delaney
and Cathy Kelly sang some
choice selections, and after
the girls and Lisa Harvey led
the whole gym in song.
This was my first Christ-
mas at SDHS and 1 was truly
impressed with the assembly,
and other Christmas activ-
ities taking place throughout
the school. And 1 am looking
forward for many more to
come.

iers are sick of the grass and
little children are anxiously
awaiting the days when they
can build snowmen in the
front lawn. However, some
people are thrilled at no snow
because this,simply means -
that they dn't have to
shovel -that rotten white
stuff. So you see, different
things bother different
people. But there are pet
Peeves that bother every-
body.
Take for instance, one of
my favourite pet peeves is
when 1 go to get a teaspoon
of sugar out of the sugar
bowl for a cup of tea or
cereal, it always seems that
the sugar bowl is empty and 1
have to fill it. Now this could
be sheer laziness on my part
and'it probably is, but it still
bugs me. The same thjngs
seems to happen with toilet
paper)
Another pet peeve is when
you finish washing your car
in the summer it always
seems to rain. The solution is
to *ash your car only after it
has rained for a few days and
you are sure it won't rain
again.
Have you ever gotten into
a really interesting book only
to find that one of the pages
is missing or ripped? Or
maybe you were geting to the
the peak of a mystery book or
television program when the
telephone' rings. People
seem to phone at the best
times. You might be in a
room painting with your
hands all painted, or having
a bath, or perhaps your
hands are in dish water. It
seems ttfat the phone rings at
these most important mo-
ments. The 'problem is when
you wipe the paint or soap
suds off of your hands or hop
out of the bath tub and dry
yourself off to answer the
telephone, it is a wrong
number anyway. This is
definitely a pet peeve.
NEXT WEEK
Back to televisie-, Have
you ever experienced the joy
of getting deeply involved in
a soap opera or drama of
some sort only to find out
'that it is to be continued next
week? This is especially
annoying if you know that
you won t be able to see the
rest of it.
Another pet peeve for
everyone would be waiting
for a particular section of the
newspaper and by the time
you finally get hold of it, it
has coffee spilled on it and is
"unreadable".

males reading this column,
read on, you may learn.
One of my favourite pet
peeves is to buy a S4 pair of
nylons only to find that they
get a run in them during the
first wear. This is really
annoying. However, 1 have
read that if you per' a new
pair of nylons in the freezer,
over -night, take them out
and wash them, they are less
likely to run. I don't know if it
works or not, but it is worth a
fry•
Another . problem ladies
run into is when they are
baking. Have you ever been
in the middle of a recipe only
to find that 3w1A pre 4hprt.half
a cup of.suggt, or something
that simple, but yet so vital
to the success of the recipe.
This has happened to me
many times. Thank goodness
for neighbours! They'usually
cone to the rescue.
This is the season for
football and hockey and a bit
of basketball. Nothing an-
noys me more than to turn
the TV set on for a soap
opera or another favourite
show and find that it has
been replaced by a treasured
sport! Recently, one of those
famous soap operas, Texas,
has been taken off of the air
permanently. What a heart-
break) We'll never find out
whether Ruby will have a boy
ora girl)
There are lots mere pet
peeves for females but niay-
be we should consider the
troubles of the male species.
FOR MALES ONLY -
Have you ever gone to
shave only to find that the
razor blade is dull because
another member of the fam-
ily has borrowed it to shave
her legs, sharpen a crayon or
experiment with shaving? I
can imagine this can be
annoying. Or how about
driving downtown to a store
to buy a product and finding,
out five minutes later that
the same product was on
special at another store or
was on sale the day before.
Another pet peeve would be
buying a new hockey stick
and breaking it during the
first game of its use. Or have
you ever gone to park your
car in a busy parking lot only
to find thitt someone with a
FOR LADIES ONLY
This part of my column
applies to ladies only be-
cause they are presumed the
only ones who can relate to
it. However, if there are any
more expensive car has
double-parked in the last
vacant parking space? That
would be enough to drive
anyone crazy.
Have you -ever noticed that
you can drive for miles and
miles looking for a restaurant
or gas station and finally find
one highly priced one. Then.
when yQu drive around the
corner y+ou see several conl.-
petitive franchises. This is

typical and definitely one of
my pet peeves.
I'm sure that there are a
lot of things that annoy you
time and time again. There is
really nothing we can do
about them. The easiest thing
to do is laugh them off and'
make jokes about them. A lot
of your pet peeves are
probably shared by others.
What is your favourite pet
