Al2 -- THE HURON EXPOSITOR JANUARY 12, 1983 Opinion trtg Whaea flii©ttpthi©? Carnival preparations better teams to be eliminated from the playoffs over poorer teams. BEARS WIN The Seaforth Golden Bears basketball team'pulled off a big win over the weekend, winning the Sarnia Colt Classic. The team defeated squads from much larger coin. munities, revealing that the Bears are contenders against any opposition. More on the games on this page. It has taken some time, but write-ups have been coming in from litany of the sports events and groups in Seaforth thanks to the efforts of coaches, managers, parents and spectators. To round out our coverage we hope to add school sports and urge those involved to contact the Expositor or send in a write-up for publication. We hope that the' co-operation that has been shown will continue and expand so that this paper has a solid sports section. RIP(GETTE TOURNEY The first ever Ringette tournament was held here last week with 16 teams participating from the area and as far away as London and Kitchener. The teams were divided into eigght junior and senior teams and played Iasf'Wedpesday and Thursday. According to Helen Crocker, one of the local organizers, the tournament was designed to promote interest in the sport which has seen a marked decline in the number of players over the past several years: She explains that some teams from other communities have had difficulty with funcig, but that locally teams have man99ddged to raise enough funds to continue. Mrs. Crocker'credits Seaforth recreation director, Bryan Peter, for much of the success of the local tournament. "If it had not been for Bryan Peter it would probably never have gotten off the ground," she says. Hopefully the tournament will help renew the interest in a sport that has enjoyed reasonable success and popularlity through the efforts of volunteers and players and has not depended on help from local minor hockey associations. BY KRIS SVELA The Seaforth Optimist Club's annual Winter Carnival to be held in-wo weeks will give town and arearesidentsiut-opportUnity to see some fine Atom hockey play as 20 teams vie for top divisional positions in a 24 game round robin tournament. Teams from the area and as far away as Kitchener, Sarnia and Orangeville will converge on the new Seaforth and District Community Centres for the three-day event. Besides the tournament, there are many other events scheduled for the. .carnival. Weather permitting, there will be competi- tion in snowmobiltng, and• cross country skiing as well as other outdoor activities. If snow should fail to materialize for the event organizers are planning a number of indoor events. Keep in mind the dates, Friday, January 21, and continuing Saturday and Sunday. CENTENAIRE CLIMB The Centenaires seem to have fully recovered from their on-again-off-again play of the first half of the season, 4oing the last six games without a loss. With three wins and three ties, the Centenaires are now in fourth place, one point..ahead of Exeter and a full five points ahead of the basement custodians, the Mitchell Hawks. Overall in the season the Centenaires have a .500 average with eight wins, 14 losses and six ties in the northerndivision of the Western Junior 'D'. Unfortunately for the two bottom teams in this division, by the end of the regular season, only the four top teams will receive a play-off berth. What seems to be somewhat uneven is that the four teams playing in the southern division will all receive play-off spots no matter how many points they have accumulated. That would, mean that a team such as Port Stanley with onlyrl2 points so far this season and playing poorly would get a playoff spot, while decisively better teams in the northern division would be forced , out. With a division split of six teams in the north and only four in the south. it seems unfair to the What's happening Is a weekly column, space donated by The Huron Expositor. Jason B. outfoxed the de- fence and the goalie in the last few minutes of the game. Steve Papple also followed up with a goal to take the goalies unaware. The steam just didn't seem to be there soon enough. Jan. 8 saw Seaforth hosting Mitchelltifor a 3:15 game. Inspired and renewed, the Seaforth green team came on strong. Steve P. scored three goals, one unassisted and assists going to Thomas Wheatley and Kenny Hilde- brand. Jason B. scored two unassisted and Steve P. help- ed in his other goal. Honour- able mentions go to Pat Maloney and Mike Coyne for their consistent efforts. The team looked much better for this game and the blades seemed to be much keener.
