Ringette tournament
Dec. 29 the Seaforth Junior
Ringette girls participated in
a Ringette Tournament at the
Seaforth Arena.
In game #1 Seaforth was
matched against Howick. The
outcome was 7-4 for Seaforth.
Scoring for SeaTorth were
Kendra Papple, Lisa O'Dwy-
er, Tammy Taylor and Lisa
Strong.
This matched Seaforth
against London for their se-
nd game. A 14-2 loss for
eaforth put Seaforth out of
the tournament.
Seaforth's goals were
scored by Lisa O'Dwyer and
Tammy Taylor.
On Sunday, January 9 the
Seaforth Junior Ringette
team was matched against
Goderich at the Seaforth
Arena. The outcome of the
rL
game was a 5-5 tier
Seaforth started the scor-
ing with goals by Kendra
Papple and Tammy Taylor,
assisting were Jacquie Mc-
Nichol and Amy Vanden
Akker. Goderich then came
back to score five goals by the
end of the first period. Not
discouraged 'by Goderich's
three goal lead, the Seaforth
girls came out in the second
period cooking.
Scoring three goals to tie
the game were Seaforth girls
Kendra Papple 'and ' Amy
Vanden Akker with team-
mates Chris Campbell and
Lisa O'Dwyer assisting.
The entire team worked
together and the girls are
starting to come on strong.
Come out and see a game.
In a Jan. 2 game, Goderich
defeated the local team 9-7.
Atoms
The Seaforth Atoms have
continued . their winning
streak by defeating Mitchell
Atoms 4.3 Saturday after-
noon.

period Seaforth led 2-0. Mit-
chell scored the only goal in
the second making the score
2-1. In the third. Mitchell
scored twice and Seaforth

lead. -
Hawks lose 6-1 despite Flyers'
poor performance. 'in IHL ' league
BY DAVE BROOME
The Hawks produced their
strongest effort of the season
last Sunday, evening and
coupled with the lethargic,
sloppy, unintere ed play of
the Flye the fo ula should
have resul a Hawk win.
The simple mathematics
and logic of the situation
pointed to a big night for the
last place white shirts - right?
Wrong.
The birds promptly lost the
game by a 6-1 count but the
score was mVch closer than
one might think.
The Hawks caught the
Flyers on an off night, but like
so many games this season,
they couldn't put a basketball
in Lake Huron.
The Flyers got some breaks
around the enemy net, and
that, combined with the
Hawks own glaring inability
to finish off plays, produced
this slightly absurd score.
Not a bad team in other
departments, the Hawks are
glaringly want of skill in the
sniper area of the game. They
arc so barren at this import-
ant part of hockey that there
are currently two players in
the league that have pro-
duced more goals than the
whole Hawk team.
It has been an unprosper-
ous year for the Hawks and
the club seems,destined to

finish in last spot.
On the other end gf the
scale are the Flyers. They
have been flourishing this
season and last''' Sundays
unflattering tsb-pointer was
their '11th straight win.
George Reeves and Casey
Van Bakel each had a pair for
the winners. ,
Rounding out the Flyer
scoring was Terry Craig and
Ben Van Den Akker.
Marc Robinette spoiled
goalie Marc Caron's shutout
bid with just 3.55 left.
PENGUINS 5 CANADIANS 3
The Penguins are endowed
with incredible depth. Depth
is the reason why they, the
Rangers and Flyers are roar-
inalong with the top of the
I.H.L. standings and the
Canadians, Bruins and
Hawks are fraternity brothers
in the dark regions of the
basement.
,The Pens didn't have Ken
Swan, Kevin Bennett; Ray
Scoins and Jobn Nash but still
secured a 5-3 triumph from
the Canadians during the
night's middle outing.
The loss of four players of
that calibre would severely
cripple most clubs but the
Penguins' dug just a little
deeper and emerged with an
important two points.
Mike, Marion, who is -hav-
ing a very good year for the
Pens, scored three times with
solo shots going to Cam
Holland and Paul Hulley.
Ron Quipp, Gary Finnigan
and Moe Huard with a rare
effort replied for the Ca-
nucks.
The win was most import-
ant for the Penguins because
it keeps their pennant hopes
alive albeit be they slim ones.
RANGERS 10 BRUINS 5
The Rangers broke open a
close game with six consecu-
tive second period goals and
went on to thump the Bruins
10-5 during last Sabbath's
Oveyard encounter.
Jim Henderson is another
former I.H.L.er who returned
this year and is playing very
well for his team.
He led the fruitful Ranger
attack by connecting four
times.
Mike Flanigan and Ray
Devereaux each had a pair for
the Blue shirts.
Singles went to Tom Dev-
ereaux and Doug Phillips.
Terry Stevenson and Jack
Ung rian scored two goals
apiec for the Bruins.
Brian Cooper chipped in a
single tally,
I.H.L. NOTES
In many instances this year,
it has been a case of the lesser
lights carrying the load. Some
of the players who normally
do well year in and year out
are having less'' than great
seasons.
Mike Marion, Jim Hender-
son, Howie Breen, Gord
O'Dwyer, Ron Hildebrand,
Marc Robinette, Steve Smith
and Rick Dalrymple have all
contributed greatly to their
teams.
The Flyers only need a win
to clinch firstpiade. There are
just three conteOleft on the 6
regular season schedule.
There were some uncompli-
mentary remarks by some
spectators afteilast Sunday's
Flyer -Hawk meeting. For the
umpteenth time this year
players spent a good portion
of the game bitching about
the refs. During the game
there were some unnecessary
hits. yapping, thrown sticks,
slashes and even a fight broke
out. Granted, the officiating
has been, some nights, bad
but not to the point of the last
couple of week's stupidity. a
This is a non -contact
league. If you can't handle
this easy pace you should get
out. We all get upset at the
zebras but from hereon in the
league better start showing
some restraint. The I.H.L.
knows its limits and is not
pretentious by any stretch of
the imagination. We have
. been getting decent crowds in
recent weeks (don't take the
word crowd literally). Let's
not embarrass ourselves any-
more.
