Dial 527.0240. by Toilet Rilow8(aQ About a year ago, 1 wrote about a conference that 1 attended over the Christmas holiday in Toronto. Called file Toc Al ha Christmas Confer- ence, it draws hundreds -of teenagers from throughout Ontario for four days of fun and friendships. I went to the conference once again this year and although it was pretty much the same as last year, -there were many differ- ences as well. The conference took place from Dec. 27 to 31, in Toronto's Skyline Hotel. There were 515 delegates, compared to 700 last year. The conference is unique since it is run mainly by teenagers. A special asset for guys is that there only two floors for them compared to the four floors of girls. This may, not seem like an advan- tage until you realize that for each boy at the conference, there are two girls. This is definitely not the purpose for going to Toc Alpha . if that was the reason delegates attended, it wouldn't be nearly, as mean- ingful. There were approxi- mately 12 delegates from the Seaforth area. Our holiday began at 10:40 last Monday morning. A big yellow sch9Qoot" bus pulled up to the depotand we were on our way. After a few stops to pick up more delegates from other towns and lunch, we arrived inthe lobby of the Skyline Hotel. After registering and getting an envelope full of informa- tion for the conference, meal tickets and keys to our rooms, we unpacked and began meeting more friends. I think that is what 1 like most about the Christmas conference, the feeling that as soon as you lemon your hotel ,t'oom for 'those four days, you meet more people and make friends. Everyone is given a name tag and has a region they are SEA1,(11•; [ Ido., i @owe awd onctotw@Glet$ apart ol. Seaforth happens to be in the biggest and best (in my opinion region, region three, As long as we had those name tags on, people could identify us. After we were all settled into our hotel rooms and familiar with the hotel and some friendly faces, we went to dinner in the dining room where all of the meals were served. Here we saw dele- gates from all parts of the province. Everyone was as hungry as the next and didn't mind complaining a bit. After that first meal, they weren't nearly as anxious to eat the. food. Actually, the food wasn't as bad as it could have been. After everyone had been fed, there was a speech made by the theme speaker. After a sing song led by the head table, all delegates went upstairs for what we call opening forum. This is a chance for each delegate to meet others and watch a slide show of last year's confer- ence. It was a chance for all of the newcomers to sense what Toc Alpha is all about. After the opening forum, all members of each region met in separate rooms for regional meetings. This was another chance to meet new people. The first night there were sessions we could take part in. These were/different from any other session that we had been to. There were sessions on dreams. dpncer- cize, journalism, poetry and subliminal advertising. After the sessions were over there. was a 50s party and dance. 1 could go through the whole agenda of the confer- ence but I'm not going to. We went to sessions where we learned about different types of stress and pressures and had many events that brought us together with new found friends. A talent show and a dance on the last night -were highlights of the .entertaih- mentagenda fot the confer- ence. I'm sure you'd be able to get a full run down of the events of the conference from any of the delegates that attended and they'd probably be glad to share their expeti- ences. Toc Alpha is a real learning experience whe- ther you are learning from the sessions or just through meeting people from differ- ent environments than you are used to. The friendships you make at Toc Alpha are very speci gad as 1 was saying good 4 tg to the many friends that I made, 1 could reassure them and myself that I would definitely be at the conference next year.
