OPEN NEW YEAR'S DAY Brussels man has hand reattached after accident A Brussels man is in good condition in London's University Hospital after nearly losing a fined in an industrial accident. Goderich OPP said Fred Stephenson, 46, had his right hand almost severed at the wrist December 15, while working with a hydraulic wood splitter at the Falls Reserve Conservation Area. The hand was later re -attached at University Hospital. "We're not sure what happened," said Les Tervit, general manager at Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. The MVCA owns and operates the Falls Reserve Con- servation Area. "But our Safety Commit- tee looked into it, and the Ministry of Labor is doing their report." The Safety Comrnittee inspected the site and checked out the working conditions and the machinery, but saw "nothing out of the or- dinary," Mr. Tervit said, adding that a representative of the committee would be speaking to Mr. Stephenson as soon as it was feasible. "There were two other peo- ple (on the site), but nobody actually saw the accident happen, said Mr. Tervit. First Aid was administered immediately because all MVCA employees are trained in emergency First Aid, he added. Mr. Stephenson was originally taken to Alexan- dra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich, and then transferred to London. The hydraulic wood splitter is back 'in use since "that was one of the initial things the Safety Committee Looked at and • there was nothing wrong from a mechanical point of view," Mr. Tervit said. "It worked fine before the accident and it worked fine afterward." Christmas bureau helps record number in 1989 The Huron County Christmas Bureau was able to give a record number of families presents for their trees, and a Christmas dinner this year, as the result of public donations and volunteers' time. A total of 346 families, including 740 children, county -wide benefitted from the bureau this year, This is up from 321 families and 708 children last Christmas. "Over the years it has increased, but there was a big increase this .year as far as we're concerned," said Peggy Denomme who helped organize the project as a Family and Children's Services Coor- dinator. "Families we've heard flour are very pleased and very grateful." The Christmas Bureau provides the children in needy families each with a toy, an article of clothing, two pairs of mittens, and help with their Christmas dinner. Groceries taken in are also given out to the families. "This is for all of the mikes with children under 16, and we think we're look- ing after all the children in ,Huron County who need it," said Ms. Denomme. Over 10,000 volunteer hours over the course of the past year went into the .bureau. "The volunteers make it happen. They are generous with their time, and we couldn't do it without them," she said. "It's a nice thing for there to•be able to do • for the needy families at Christmas time. Some say this is all they'll have under the tree and it's nice to be able to make sure there's something for their children on Christmas Day.
