Austrian organist and hungry mouse give world present The whole world owes a debt of gratitude to Austria, and particularly to the little Austrian village of Oberdorf by Salsburg, on the frozen River Salzach. It was here than an organist named Franz Gruber, a priest named Joseph More, and a hungry little mouse - unnam- ed - collaborated to give the whole world a truly magnificent Christmas present. On December 23, 1818, a wily mouse chewed a hole in the bellows of the organ in Father More's church of St. Nicholas. Father More and his organist, Franz Gruber, were aghast. The Christmas Eve program had already been prepared, with music that required organ accompaniment Because of the hole in the bellows, the organ wouldn't work - and Christmas without music was unthinkable! Father More hastily wrote out the words for a simple carol. On his spinet at home, Franz :Grube picked put a.sim ile melody to aceainjiaiiy the lyrics. Just before the service, they assembled 12 children from the village to rehearse the carol. And on Christmas Eve, the surpris- ed congregation of the Church of St. Nicholas saw the children file up to the altar at Midnight Mass, flanked by Father More and Franz Gruber who were carry- ing, of all things, two guitars. To the soft accompaniment of the guitars, the children began to sing while the congregation listened, spellbound. Something infinitely simple and pure of thought was born that Christmas Eve over 170 years ago, a carol that will endure as long as Christmas itself. For over the still, Austrian midnight drifted the strains of the most beautiful carol of all time - "Silent Night, Holy Night."
