'Novice one Tpoint sshy of Silver Stick qualificatiort
The=Saforth Novice hockey club travell
ed=trParkhitl ,this pastweekend to deobat-
tle ,for ,one of minor :hockey's most
presttgous awards - the Silver Stick.
{With _skates sharpened, sticks freshly
taped, and Thursday .and Friday practices
now .only a memory, coach Murray
Henderson assembled his team to begin
round robin action against group B-2 ;op-
ponents North London, Lambeth and
Aylmer. With only three players with
previous -Silver Stick experience and facing
three teams about which the coaching staff
kenw 'very little, .this group of youngsters
would have to rely on,.hard work and sheer
determination.
When group B-2 play had been com-
pleted it -proved to be the best matched of
the'groups as four of the six games were
decided by one goal, another by two goals
and the largest margin of victory was
Seaforth's 6-2 win over North London. In
B-3 Faction. St. Mary's beat West London 6-3
for that group's best game. Other B-3 ac-
tion.saw Kitchener get heat by at least 10
goals in .all three games, while Dresden
got heat by five goals twice. Group B-1 in-
cluded Seaforth's arch rival Mitchell, who
finished with a 1-1-1 record for second
place in that division.
Winning the game was not the bottom
line at this tournament. Within each full
game there existed three mini games as a
team was awarded two points for each
period won, one point for a tied period and
four points for a team if they won the
game.
The tight division play of group B-2 pro-
ved to be costly to Seaforth because when
play bad finished they were second, but
hoped their point total of 19 would be
enough to advance them to semi-final ac-
tion as the "wild card team". But lopsid-
ed wins by St. Mary's and West London in
5-3 action left Seaforth with very little
chance unless one or the other ad-
ministered another threshing. St. Mary's
won 6-3 but they split the period by period
points therefore eliminating Seaforth.
Seaforth started the•tournament Saturday
afternoon with an impressive 6-2 win over
North London and also collected 10 points
for their effort.
North London struck first and early, but ..
before the period was half over Scott
Henderson and Scott Van Dooren had
given Seaforth the 2-1 lead. Kevin Virtue

Two hundred and fifty miles and 40
hours later the Seaforth Pee Wee "CC"
rolled ,backed into their home town clut-
ching the :championship trophies from the
Oak Ridges Christmas Cracker
Tournament.
What looked like an easy tournament on
Saturday turned into a gruelling exodus for
Seaforth on Sunday. A hot London
goaltender held Seaforth to a 7 goal win
and, shots by the Pee Wee "CCs" were too
numerous to count. Goals were scored by
Mike Deveraux, Wayne Schoonerwoerd,
Mike MoylaneBoyd Devereaux (2), Jamie
McNichol and Mike Weber. Assists went to
Mike Weber (3), Mike Deveraux (2),
Jamie McNichol (2) and Jason Henderson
(1). Seaforth wins first round 7-0.
Later Saturday night Seaforth met up
with the Rochester Americans for the se-
cond game of the tournament. Coach Bill
Weber had already been briefed by the
Rochester boys during a chance meeting,
that they were going to come out hitting
hard ,hoping to intimidate the Seaforth Pee
Wees. With this knowledge, Mr. Weber
coached the boys with a "catch us if you
can!" attitude and Rochester came out hit- .
ting hard, but unfortunately for them all
they hit were the boards. The Seaforth Pee
Wee "CCs" used their quickness then to

The Petite ringette team was in Mitchell
for a tournament this weekend. •
They won their first game 9-4 against
Mitchell.
They lost their second game 7-4, against
Exeter and their third game 5-0 against St.
Marys.
Goalscorers were Kathy Devereaux with
9, Krissy Holland with 2, Kelly Devereaux
with one and Erin Seimon with 1. .
Assisting on goals were Kelly Devereaux
with 7, Jane Crowley with 3, Erin.Seimon
Henderson retrieved the shot, and sent it
to Nolan, who reloaded and fired it six in-
ches wide to the left.
Down 1-0 after one period and 2-0 early
in the second Scott Henderson let Lambeth
know they were in a a contest as he slip-
ped one home three minutes into the
period. Lambeth tallied late to make it 3-1
and steal another two points for winning
the period.
Steven Phillips made several' nice stops
to keep it close until Scott Van Dooren
could shake the constant shadow of
numbers 16 and nine who had done their
homework on Seaforth's game Saturday.
Stop the Scott and Scott show and your
chances of winning really improve.
Lambeth's 4-1 -dead really looked good
until Jason Hulley got the puck to an
unguarded Scott V. who cut the lead to
two. Three minutes later Scott H. sent a
rinkwide pass to Nolan who fed it back
rinkwide-to Scott V. who was then in alone
to make it 4-3. This set up a flurry of near
misses and sparkling saves as Seaforth
battled to get a tie. The biggest groan
came when Adam Leonhardt picked up a
rebound with the goalie down and out and
fired the puck wide of the open net. Goalie
Steven Phillips made his way to the bench
lugged the puck into Aylmer's end and
found Henderson in front to jump into the
lead for the first time. With 2:35 left
Aylmer's Mark Holmes beat Sean Ludwig,
who was absent from the line-up for the
early game, from 20 feet to set the stage
for an exciting finsih.
After 2:17 of good action Scott Van
Dooren found himself streaking fn alone in
hunt of his ninth goal and his team's fifth
of the game, a goal that would almost cer-
tainly seal a victory. As Van Dooren
reached the blueline the Aylmer goalie
decided meeting him -halfway was a good
idea. But Van Dooren countered that move
by taking him wide and as most goalies
the bulk of the pads caused him to be
unable to react quick enough and Scott
escorted the winning goal into the wide
open cage. The final 5-4 now meant
Seaforth had to sit and wait to see if their
point total of 19 was enough. But it wasn't
meant to be as West London finished with
20 points.
