'Tourism study encourages cooperation
BY BILL HENRY
A new study of tourism in Huron Coun-
ty is encouraging cooperation rather than
competition among businesses and com-
munities providing tourist services.
The three-phase study, which began in
.September, expects to survey 80 per cent
or more of the 1,000 Huron County
businesses which cater to tourists here,
says Jason Chu, a county planner who is
coordinating the project.
Basic information about the business
location and ownership, hours, and ser-
vice offered are being stored in a com-
puter database which will eventually be
used for county -wide promotional
materials. At the same time, the study is
collecting opinions from the people offer-
ing the services on how the county can
best market tourism, and what training
is needed.
So far, most agree that tourism
marketing must be cooperative. They
also agree that people working in tourism
need specialized training to become more
familiar with what the whole county
offers.
Phase two of the study, expected to get
underway early next year, will take a
similar look at tourist attractions
throughout Huron County.
Annual events, festivals, celebrations,
fairs and so on will be similarly analyz-
ed and listed. Such events as the Zurich
Bean Festival, Clinton's Klompenfest,
Goderich's Canada Day Celebrations and
others would be included in that study.
GUIDE TO BE PUBLISHED
The third, or organizational phase of
the study would probably lead to a
publication before the next tourist season
of a guide listing all businesses and at-
tractions in the county, similar to a docu-
ment compiled several years ago listing
all of Huron's social services.
While it's early in the investigation,
Chu says ideally the publication would
take a blanket approach to promotion.
One purpose, he adds, is to learn from
the tourism industry in Huron what kind
of marketing it feels is needed.
"The most ideal case is to incorporate
the tourism support services and the at-
tractions into one publication," says Chu.
With a Masters degree in Regional Plan-
ning and Resource Development, Chu
was hired by the county in September to,
among other things, coordinate the two-
year tourism strategy.
"We're trying to adopt a sustainable
development approach to tourism promo-
tion and marketing" which includes pro-
viding informational resources and focus
for similar groups within the county
which may be geared to the same
market.
"We're trying to pull people together
with the same or similar interests to
cooperate rather than compete with each
other. Cooperation is really the theme," Called the Tourism Promotional Ad -
