Ministry funds drstrib.ution of smart hockey video
Hockey teams across Ontario will soon
receive an important gift in the mail: the
"Smart Hockey video promoting safe,
clean hockey
The provincial government will provide
$90,000 to mail the video to amateur
hockey teams with players 11 years and
older. The announcement was made at the
Hockey Hall of Fame by Ed Fulton,
Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario
Minister of Tourism and Recreation Ken
Black.
"Smart Hockey" features former Na-
tional Hockey League goal -scoring cham-
pion Mike Bossy, who says most disabling
hockey injuries occur after players hit
their opponents from behind into the
boards
Since 1981. more than 140 Ontario
elementary ana secondary schools,
women's and recreation hockey teams,
cable and network television and boards of
education.
"I would like to challenge players,
coaches, teachers and parents to support
Mike's message in the video," Mr. Fulton
said. "We all must do our part to reinforce
positive attitudes toward safety in,hockey.,.
"Smart Hockey" is part of the Ministry's
long-term strategy to reduce injuries in
sports, recreation and fitness activities in
Ontario.
Mike Bossy played 10 seasons with the
New York Islanders, winning four Stanley
Cup championships, two goal -scoring titles
and three Lady Byng trophies as the most
gentlemanly player. He is 16th on the
NHL's all-time points scoring list.

QUEENS 1 - COMMERCIAL 1
Commercial's Linda Boyd tipped the ball
in over the opposing goalie's shoulder off
a great pass by Susan Hulley. There was
only one minute and 19 seconds remaining
in the game when cunning Cheryl Kruse
picked up a dynamite pass from goalie
Norah Eckert, broke down centre ice and
blew a shot by the opposing goalie to tie
the game up. What relief for the Queens
Ladies.
JR. FARMERS 0 - WINTHROP 1
Tracy Bennett slapped the ball home for
Winthrop in this contest. Great team help
came from Marg Flanagan and goalie
Norah Eckert. Those Jr. Farmers are very
strong minded people so keep up the good

players have become permanently crippl-
ed with neck and spinal cord injuries after
being hit head -first into the boards. "Smart
Hockey" promotes clean, safe hockey and
offers prevention tips to eliminate these
unnecessary injuries.
"We are proud of our hockey heritage
but recognize it can be a high-risk sport,"
Mr. Fulton said. "The `Smart Hockey'
video will help us reach our common goal
of reducing injuries in hockey."
The Canadian Sports Spine and Head In-
juries Research Centre, which produced
"Smart Hockey" earlier this year, will
handle its distribution. The Canadian
Amateur Hockey Association, NHL
Players' Association and the Ministry also
provided financial support.
The video will also be mailed to Ontario

Seaforth Seahawks nudged from
tournament win on weekend
It took just nine seconds for the Milver-
ton Four -Wheel Drives to rain on the
Seaforth Seahawks' parade Sunday after-
noon at Drayton. That's how long it took
for them to score a pair of goals late in
the thirdperiod and nudge the locals 2-1 in
the A final of the annual intermediate
hockey tournament.
The Seabawks advanced to that final
with a 5-1 win over Ingersol that morning,
and a 4-3 victory over Brussels Saturday
afternoon. The Seahawks' regularly
scheduled game at Hillsburgh with Grand
Valley Saturday night was postponed
because of the weather conditions. They
play their next .game this Friday night at
the arena when Brussels comes to town for
an 8:30 tilt.
