Here are some great VALUES on some great
FUN! Just like the real thing. Only smaller.
A I I students benefit from enrichment program
Grade 9 students at Seaforth District
High School spent Friday morning in a
rather unusual set of classes. Reading,
writing and arithmetic was put aside for a
few hours, making way for trapping,
focussing and trirnn ing the sails as part of
a school -wide educational enrichment
program.
David Onn, Student Resource teacher at
SDHS, explained that the Grade 9 pro-
gram, held for one morning in December,
is the first in a series of half-day and full-
day programs that are offered to students.
This is the third year of the enrichment
program for the ninth grade. Come spring,
the students will attend a full day at the
Hullett Conservation area, integrating all
of their regular classes into the
environment.
"Some subjects, such as typing, are hard
to fit in," Mr. Onn admits with a chuckle.
The enrichment program attempts to
provide something every year for students
at every grade level. Grade 10 travels to
the Science Centre in Toronto, and a three-
day trip to Bark Lake Leadership Centre
is a possibility for Grade 11 students. The
first group of students to filter through the
program will be entering the twelfth grade
in 1990-91, and the the idea of a sym-
posium, where Seaforth High Grade 12
students would host nationally -known guest
speakers and students from neighboring
schools, has been brought forth for con-
sideration. No concrete plans have been
made so far.
"We're introducing this (program) in
stages," remarks Mr. Onn. "The logistics
of this are pretty large." .
For Friday's Grade 9 program at the
school, for instance, students were original-
ly given a list of 40 extracurricular sub-
jects that could be introduced in the mor-
ning, That list was pared down to 10 sub-
jects, and professionals and teachers from
the area were then sought out. Of the 10,
Mr. Onn and the committee were able to
track down eight instructors, including
Gregor Campbell of Seaforth
(photography), Steve Little from Goderich
MAYBE BY THE SUMMER...- But it's never too soon in the season to start lear-
ning, grade nine students at SDHS discovered Friday morning. These four girls
were taking part in Steve Little's windsurfing class as part of a half-day enrich-
ment program. Students were offered a choice of eight subject areas to pursue
for the morning. Elliott photo.
(windsurfing) and Jim Robbins from the
Hullett Conservation Authority (trapping
and hunting).
The benefits of the program are
manifold, but there are basically three
main objectives, Mr. Onn explains.
"To give everybody a chance for enrich-
ment, as opposed to a small group of
students...to involve the community..and to
integrate the enrichment into the students'
curriculum," he says.

BACK CARE - A number of employees from the Seaforth Community Hospital par-
ticipated in a blitz on back care last week. The in-service was conducted •by the
Physiotherapy Department and Occupational Health and Safety Committee of the
hospital, in an effort to decrease the number of hospital employees who experience
pain and suffering from back pain. Seen here, Joyce McClure helps Elsie Doig

Has the program been worthwhile?
Definitely, Mr. Onn asserts.
"I think of all of the activities, this has
been the most successful," he notes, nod-
ding towards a group of students packing
up scuba diving gear. Barring the odd
disciplinary difficulty, the out -trips are also
very beneficial.
'We really try to relate the facilities
there to their studies," says Mr. Onn.
"It's not like it's just going somewhere
for the heck of it."
