Drakar Engineering Limited, who performed the inspection, noted that the levelling cables on truck number 2 contained broken strands and should be replaced at a cost of $1,272. However, visual and manual in- spection of the cables in question by Tom Philips and PUC crew members revealed no fraying, It was questioned whether the Seaforth truck could have been confused with another one when the report was writ- ten, and no repairs will be made at this time, The Seaforth PUC is in the process of in- stalling 24 new streetlights at the north end of Main St. Also, the Christmas lights will be going up next week in preparation for the downtown Christmas Shopping party. Ona Christmas note, the PUC is still on the lookout for a tree for the town hall. If you could help them out, they would ap- preciate it. Manager Tom Philips will be speaking with Bell Canada in regards to a fibre op- tics line to be installed in town. The new line, which will be underground and in con- duit, will be run from the hospital south to the Dixie Lee, along the east side of Col- eman St. to Gouinlock St. and behind the Victoria Park bandahell to the Bell office. The exact placement of the conduit is unknown, and repairs to the fibre optics line would be extremely costly if it were accidently severed. Hydro and water lines are also underground along the proposed Bell route. Commission members• were presented with the proposed 1990 budget. The budget was approved by the Commission; and will be sent to Ontario Hydro for approval or reccomendations. The 1990 rate proposals will be drafted up in accordance with the budget. Among the items slated for capital expenditures is a new radio system for the trucks, The PUC is presently using radios purchased in 1974. Quotes of $899 for a hand-held and $750 for a portable Motorola model radio are being considered, but no decision was made as to any purchases. Concern was expressed over a report from - the ' Cobourg PUC, stating that the Ministry of the Environment has imposed terms and conditions" on watermain pro- jects submitted for approval. These "terms and conditions", it appears, will require water authorities to do a complete study of the waterworks system before any work can be done, and a report must be filed annually with the Ministry District Office. These terms will apply to all municipal water authorities in Ontario. Manager Tom Philips remarked that this could turn out to be a highly time-consuming and restric- tive procedure for the municipalities. Ontario Hydro has proposed a showerhead replacement program for municipalities who wish to participate. This program would involve replacing showerheads in hotels, motels, senior citizens apartments and retirement homes with new, energy efficient showerheads at no cost to the Utility Commissions. It was suggested that perhaps the wrong institu- tions were singled out for the program, and that community centres and high schools would benefit most from this energy conservation plan'. Analysis • from page 1 The wormer, known as Equiverm-B and packaged by Davis and Lawrence, is to be administered to horses and ponies around the beginning of the winter to rid the animals of fly eggs which could hatch in the stomach. The mare and pony were dosed with wormer from the same lot number, while the filly received wormer from a different lot number. Vicki, a student at Centralia, is having a tune ffetusmortem done on the of $125. No results were reported as of yet, but a bacteria has been isolated in the mare which somehow got into the placenta and traumatized the fetus. She also has a small amount of the wormer left over from the pony's dosage, and this will be sent to the Equine Research Centre at the University of Guelph for testing. Miss . Tremeer was contacted by a veterinarian from Canada Packers who in- formed her that the wormer could not have caused the abortion. A localized reac- tion to the boticide contained in the wormer was cited as the reason for the pony's bout of colic. He did note that there has been some question was to whether it should be ad- ministered to pregnant mares, and that he would be interested in knowing the results of the autopsy on the foal fetus. "If somebody has questioned it, something's happened", Miss Tremeer points out. Reiny Freiter, manager of the Seaforth Co-op where the wormer was purchased, stated that the wormer is still on the shelf. "As far as I'm concerned, theroduct is still safe", he said on Tuesday. "The manufacturer and the distributor are look- ing into it, and they're finding nothing wrong with the product." "Until we get direction from the manufacturing .company, it will remain on the shelf," .he added. Results from the autopsy are expected later this week. "All I: know Is that I've got $200 in costs .pee far," Vicki Tremeer commented. ' Noi, o,dyy's goirtg.10 ,pay my bills, that's the roblem." .._ .. ,.... ,.u.
