Seaforth Centenaires suffered two tough
losses at home this weekend in spite of
superior goaltending by Jason :Cooper and
Bill Tremeer. Mitchell defeated the
Centenaires 5-3 on Friday night, and
`Wellesley won a 3-2 decision on Sunday
afternoon.
Friday's game was scoreless Throughout
the entire first period. Mitchell struck the
first blow early in the second period, but
Seaforth was quick to answer. The superior
scoring line of Brad Beutenmiller, Ted Sills
and Brad Carter was responsible for all of
The scoring in this game, and the trio
swung into action midway through the se-
cond period with a power -play goal against
Mitchell, with Beuttemniller putting the
puck in the net. Three minutes later Beut-
tenmiller scored again, assisted by Carter
and Sills, on a short-handed effort against
the Mitchell squad. Seaforth led the game
2-1 until the final 20 seconds of the period,
when Mitchell tied up the match.
Mitchell seemed unstoppable in the third
period, muscling in three goals within the
space of three minutes and making the
score 5-2 against the dazed Centenaires.
The offensive line pulled themselves
together and stuffed in a power -play goal
at the 9:21 mark, Carter assisted by Sills
and Beutenmiller, but it wasn't to be.
Seaforth couldn't get to the net to make up
the two -goal defecit, and the game ended
5-3 in favour of Mitchell.
Steve Papple, back from Junior 'C'. in
Goderich, suited up with the Centenaires
on Sunday afternoon and announced his
return to Seaforth with a goal and an
not easy r and for Centenaires
assist against 'Wellesley.
"He'll add some much needed offence,"
coach Graham •Nesbitt commented on Pap-
ple's reappearance on the team.
"We're playing a good defensive :game
now, we just have to work on our offence."
The Centenaires' powerplay, lacking in
the past, seems to be in fine working order
lately, but Seaforth could not manage a
single even -strength goal all weekend.
Jason Cooper performed admirably in
net on Sunday, stopping 27 off the 30 shots
on goal in a hard-fought contest against
the Wellesley Apple Jacks. Wellesley
scored the first goal of the game halfway
through the first period, and neither team
was heard from again until the third
period. Darren Akey, assisted by Steve
Papple and Jason McNichol, scored on a
Seaforth power -play early into the period
to tie the game. Wellesley replied with a
power -play goal minutes later, just as
Jason Beuttenmiller was getting back on-
to the ice from a holding penalty. The gap
was widened a minute later when
Wellesley scored yet again, making the
score 3-1. Steve Papple flicked in a goal
for the Centenaires on assists by Brad
Carter and Jeff Gemmell, but try as they
might, Seaforth couldn't get to the
Wellesley net and the contest ended with
Wellesley victorious, 3-2.
A few of the Centenaires' old guard were
noticeably absent from • the ice this
weekend. Mike Betties, Steve Schroeder
and Andy' Ball didn't suit up for the games
on Friday and Sunday, with a `disciplinary'
reason cited, but Coach Graham Nesbitt is
hopeful that this snarl can be untangled
"We're just adjusting the attitudes here",
he remarked on Monday. "We're trying to
get everybody going in the same direc-
tion."
It's promising to see the Centenaires'
defensive line shaping up. With any luck,
the multi -point defeats of the early part of
the season are history. The team is going
to have to sharpen up on its offence
though. If the seven breakaways an Friday
night had yielded seven, or evlh three,
goals, it would have been a different Story
altogether.
The team is on the road. Friday fright,
travelling to Tavistock to take on the
Braves. Their next home game is on Sun-
day afternoon when Mitchell will once
again be in town. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
TUSSLE AT THE NET - Brad Beutenmiller holds off a Wellesley player at the net
during Sunday's home game, while Ted Sills does battle with yet another. Great
defence couldn't save the Centenaires, who lost the match 3-2. Elliott photo.

Brasseur fell during one jump and that

Curling underway
at Seaforth club
WI' BESOM AN' STONE
BY JEAN ROSS
The golf clubs have been 'laid to rest' and
the curling broom and boots are in action at
the Seaforth Curling Club. It is said a Scot-
tish Regiment introduced curling to Cana-
dians in the 1700s at Quebec City, for which
local curlers are most grateful. It is a great
source of exercise, good companionship and
friendly rivalry which is usually settled
amiably after curling, in the lounge.
There are scheduled leagues from Mon-
day to Friday nights. Monday night is the
men's league with draws at 7 and 9; Tues-
day eight at 7:30 is the Ladies League;
Wednesday night is the Challenge League at
8 o'clock for men, women or juniors who
enter their own rink (foursome) alid who
are very keen to become champions.'T'hurs-
day night is mixed curling with draws at 7
and 9.
On Friday night at 6 o'clock is the Junior
Curlers league. This veer they have 36
juniors, 10 of them are new curlers, which is
encouraging. There is mixed curling at 8
o'clock on Friday night. Saturday is usually
4 reserved for bonspiels. There was a Junipr
Farmers' Bonspiel on Sunday, November 12
with . entries from Seaforth and Huron,
Halton and Middlesex counties. Middlesex
No. 1 rink won the "A" Division; Middlesex
hie. 2 fink won the "13" Division. The
