Centenaires win pre -season match
The Seaforth Centenaires won their first
game on home ice this year when they
took the Wellesley Apple Jacks 7-6 in ex-
hibition play.
Once ,again the club got off to a tentative
start and allowed Wellesley to take a two
goal lead early in the first period. But
Jason McNichol was set up for a
breakaway by Brad Carter and Jason
Beuttenmiller, and deked the goaltender.
Rich Boddy tied the game with a drive
from the high slot before the period end-
ed. Blair Beuermann and Tim Matheson
assisted on the goal.
Brad Carter put the Cents' ahead with a
wraparound from behind the net eary in
the third, Wellesley tied the game with a
power pley goal, but a Seaforth power play
resulted in Ryan Taylor getting Seaforth's
fourth goal assisted by Carter and
McNichol.
"In the third period we got, into a bit of
a ;shootout," says Cents' coach Graham
Nesbitt. With only a minute gone on the
clock Wellesley tied the score 4-4, and for
a while it looked like it would stay that
way. But Brian Taylor got one for Seaforth
from a breakaway while the club was
short-handed with about 10 minutes in the
game. Three and a half minutes later
Wellesley tied the game at five. With 1:15
left to play Seaforth again scored shor-
thanded, when Tim Matheson scored from
Brad Beuttenmiller.
The Apple Jack goaltender left his net in
favor of an extra attacker to attempt to tie
the game. With 49 seconds to play Seaforth
goaltender Bill Tremeer stopped a shot and
Matheson picked up the rebound and drove
it the distance of the ice into the empty
net. With,12 seconds to play Wellesley got
a power play goal and came within a point
of the Cents'. Off the following faceoff
Wellesley made another rush and Seaforth
goaltender Bill Tremeer made a nice glove
grab to save the game for the locals with
nine seconds left to play. Seaforth won the
faceoff in their end, put the puck in the
corner, and held on to a 7-6 win.
The Centenaires lineup has been
streamlined in the past week. The team
dropped a goaltender and is now going
with two: Jason Cooper and Bill Tremmer.
