Under 18 soccer team successful
St. Columban's under 18 soccer team
had a fairly successful first season in the
Forest City International Youth Soccer
League. Although St. Columban did not
finish high in the season standings they
did manage to win the playoffs to win the
Challenge Cup and were also runners up
for the London City Friendship Cup.
The Friendship Cup was a game played
for the overall championship which
meant that St. Columban (playoff cham-
pions) played against Sarnia Dante
(League Champions). This game was
played in London on September 17. The
game ended in a 2 to 0 victory for Sarnia
Dante. St. Columban had several scoring
chances but could not put one in the net.
Although St. Columban lost the game,
they should be congratulated for playing
so well against a team like Sarnia. Sar-
nia Dante only lost one game all year
and they also had a three wins, one tie
and one loss record against teams from
Italy when they went to Italy this
summer.
St. Columban's coach and players
would like to thank all the people who
came out to support them this year.
No room for second place in national trials
BY MIKE WELISCRAFT
TM There is no room for second place
finishers at a National Retriever Cham-
pionship Stake like the one held last
week at Hullett Provincial Wildlife
Area.
To the winner goes the spoils,
"' trophies, ribbons and prestige. If you
don't win, you get an "A" for effort but
that's it.
If you don't win you don't get a
thing," noted Jim Donnelly, chairman
of the event's board.
" "All of these dogs have been invited
from retrievers which have placed high
• at an earlier trial. This is the cream of
the cream. It's very competitive," he
added.
Seafort team
,forst in golf
" The Seaforth Golf Club hosted the 1989
,.,Huron Perth Golf Championships on
Thursday, September 21. Eleven boy's
,'teams and five girl's teams from the con-
ference vied for the championships.
In the boy's competition, the host
'Seaforth team placed first with a very
strong showing. The second place team
-'-was 13 strokes behind the Seaforth team.
r David McNairn of Seaforth also won in-
r:ldividual honors by capturing the in-
'"dividual boy's championship on the first
rextra playoff hole. Members of the vic-
•1torious Seaforth team were David
•°'McNairn - 79, Tony Greidanus - 78,
f"Karsten Carroll - 82, and Aaron Broome -
.287. The boys compete in the W.O.S.S.A.
'golf championships in Ingersoll on Thurs-
%day, September 28.
The championship trial is the pinnacle
of the summer season and wraps up a
hectic schedule which began in May at
Long Point.
Most of the trainers in attendance are
hobbyists as there are only "about
four" trainers who currently earn their
living as professionals in Ontario, noted
Donnelly.
Some of the trainers at last week's
trial came from as far as California,
Alaska, Virginia and Manitoba.
The breed of choice among trainers is
the Black Labrador because, as one
trainer said, "Labs are very tractable
and gentle. They will take a lot of
pressure in training without giving you
that growl. Some dogs will, bite the
hand that feeds them but Labs are very
good," he said.
"They have a naturally oily coat so
that limits the effect of cold water and
cold air as well."
Normally, the participants compete in
a trial which lasts about a day and a
half but the national chanapibnship'is'
spread out over a five day period with
many different events scheduled over
different terrain.
Events include water singles, doubles
and triples with similar land situations
and blind events.

What determines a single from a dou-
ble is the number of birds brought in by
the retriever and in a blind event only
the trainer see where the bird rests and
he must direct the dog to it using silent
or verbal signals.
The trainers vary from laborers to
, doctors who have a passionate interest
in what Donnelly called, "the
gentleman's aspect of hunting."
"Some of the men here train dogs for
people who aren't physically able or
who don't have the time. One guy here
has nine dogs (out of 86 in total) in this
trial so he has had a very good sum-
mer," notes Donnelly.
"There is a lot of prestige involved in
having a field trial champion and it
takes a lot of work to ,get one."
There is no hunting involved with the
national championship. Organizers ob-
tained a $4,000 grant from the Canadian
National Sportsman, Show to purchase
300 ducks and 300 pheasants,
"_Theoretically, all - i tests set up,
sir iht ate l ithtiteg Cdii.l .'bhs. That -is a
little funny "beeause°rione of these degs
will ever actually go hunting. They are
strictly trial dogs," explained Donnelly.
Each retriever has been trained to go
from its starting point to the bird, with
