NATIONAL FINALIST - Murray Townsend of RR 4 Seaforth represented Ontario at the national plowing match in Prince
Edward Island on August 23-25 and managed to win the title of Junior Reserve .Champion. Of the six provinces competing
only the plowman from Quebec scored higher than Murray, beating him by a point and a half on two plowed. lands. The final
score was 534 to 532.5. Murray earned the right to compete in the nationals by winning the provincial title at the

A local youth recently returned from the
Canadian Plowing Match, where he earn-
ed the title of Reserve Junior Champion of
Canada.
Murray Townsend, 18 -year-old son of
George and Ruth of RR 4 Seaforth, won
the Ontario Junior Championship at the In-
ternational Plowing Match last year, and
earned the right to represent this province
at the nationals. He was in Dundas, Prince
Edward Island,' from August 23 to 25
where he plowed against competition from
British Columbia,,,Alberta, -Quebec, New
Brunswick and P.E.I.
Murray went to P.E.I. early to get some
practice on the foreign soil before the com-
petition. It paid off, and on the first day of
the competition he placed second behind
the plowman trom Quebec. So, on the se-
cond day he hoped to make up enough
points to win the competition. His land did
score highest on the second day, and his
rival from Quebec placed third,. but the
Quebecois scored high enough onthe first
day that he still managed to take first,
beating Murray by only a point and a half.
"I wasn't worried about winning, I just
went out there and learned a lot," says
Murray.
He first began plowing competitively
about seven years ago when his fathler.got
him interested in the sport. He .has plow-
ed all over Ontario and has been to the
IPM every year since 1982, but the 1988
IPM was his first big success.
"Last year was the first time I won
anything major," he says, adding that he
wasn't expecting to place at the nationals.
"You're not expecting, but you know you
can do it." Murray learned what it takes
to win at plowing from other successful
junior plowmen in this area whom he com-
peted against, like Paul Dodds and Jeff
McGavin.
Murray admits he was nervous about
representing Ontario in P.E.I.
"You're a little .nervous. The lands you
.,are,on.,are, longer and wider, than .in On-
ctario; • intra 'thi=rd is a timer and they take
points off your score for every minute you
run over (the allotted time). Little things."
Murray plant -to take next year off com-
petitive plowing, and instead concentrate
on his first year of study at Wilfred
• Laurier University.
