The three -fold purpose of the program .is to educate people in Huron County about the disease, to identify people who have Alzheimer's, and to give them assistance through counselling. Alzheimer Disease is a disorder of the brain that causes memory loss and men- tal deterioration over a period of two to twenty years. Though most common in elderly people, the disease has been known to strike people as young as 28, Nancarrow said. "Education will produce public accep- tance (of Alzheimer Disease). Right now people think it's shameful that their hus- band or wife doesn't know who they are anymore. As the disease progresses, it becomes even more frightening. Educa- tion will debunk the myths and ease any guilt and shame," she added. Counselling, public awareness pro- grams, and educational services are available to help victims, families, and the general public learn more about the .disease and cope with it, Nancarrow said. Because Alzheimer patients have serious memory loss, they require cons- tant care. Coupled with altered percep- tual abilities and a loss of coordination, .they often face danger in something as simple as crossing a road. "(Alzheimer patients) require 24 -hour - a -day care. It's exhausting, exasperating and thankless" for the family or the per- son caring for the patient, Nancarrow said. "(The patients) forget to look when they're .;sing the street, forget that •when the stove is on, it's hot, or head for the fridge and end up outside." "The caregiver or spouse in either case needs a lot of support. It's essentially a grief process. For a spouse, this person is no longer the person they married. (The body is still there) but the disease is robbing them of their personality. It's almost worse than divorce or death, especially in the case of a young person." The program serves to support the caregiver as intensively as the patient. •Family support groups are being organiz- ed throughout Huron County to aid in the ,.,peer support process in addition to :Deadlines e disease support FRESH BAKED SPECIALS Specials In Effect Thursday, Friday Saturday - While Supplies Lest APPLE PIE 8 INCH Tasty -Nu Store Only CRUSTY ROLLS i DOZ1 . is FRENCH BREAD LOAF .99 HURON COUNTY'S new Alzheimer's Program is designed to help both Alzheimer pa- tients and their families or caregivers, Program coordinator Pam Nancarrow is actively involved with developing family support groups to supplement the program's counsell- ing services. Besides private inquiries about the pro- gram, Alzheimer patients and their families are referred to the program by medical and paramedical institutions. Nursing homes, day centers and the Vic- torian Order of Nurses `also refer many to the centre, located in Clinton. Funds for the program are provided through the Ministry of Community and Social Services, under program super- visor Linda Girard at the London area office. The Huron program was instituted in April, but an Alzheimer's steering com- mittee has been operational for close to ring for pork pli•,n There is about a year and a half left to go before the planned ending date of March 31, 1991 for the Ontario Pork In- dustry Improvement Plan. A series of deadlines have been im- plemented to ensure that the remaining funds will be transferred to producers in an orderly fashion. For those producers who are not yet enrolled, they have until DECENBER 31, 1989 to do so. For those producers who are in the pro- gram, grant -applications -for -items or ser- vices purchased prior to March 31, 1989 must be in the County office by OC - .two years under the direction of Kate Moriarty and Ken Engelstad, executive director of Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. Nancarrow, a marriage and family therapist, has a Master of Arts degree from Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo. She worked for 12 years in the volunteer sector, headed the volunteer management program at Conestoga Col- lege for three years, and trained with the Interfaith Pastoral Counselling Centre. Her role with the Huron County Alzheimer's Program is to identify gaps in county services for seniors, and specifically people with the Alzheimer disease. Nancarrow is also developing family support groups county -wide. • OLD FASHIONED, PKG 6 DATE SQUARES DELICIOUS, PKG.
