Mainstreet program will wrap up
After three years the Town of Seaforth's
contract with Mainstreet Canada is coming
to a close, and a special day has been set
aside to look back on the program and its
achievements here
September 7 will be the wrap-up day,
and it will begin with a dinner at the
Queens Hotel This dinner is intended for
about 30 people who have been closely
associated with the Mainstreet project, in-
cluding the present town council, the past
town council. chairpersons of various com-
mittees, the Mainstreet co-ordinators, etc.
At this darner the Mainstreet Canada
Regional co-ordinator Tom Lemon will
make presentations from Heritage Canada
to the town, including a report that sum-
marizes the p'-ograrn in Seaforth.
At 7:30 p.m. a public gathering will be
held in front of the Town hall' tor. tile, of-
ficial opening of the Civic Court. The t3ivic
Court is the first phase of the Streetscape'
program, and will be "tangible evidence of
the work of the Mainstreet Program," says
Mainstreet Coordinator Alex Shevchuck. At
the ribbon cutting for the Civic Court will
be a special surprise guest and historical
figure.
"Hopefully we'll have a bit of fun," said
Mr, Shevchuk.
Following the opening of the Civic Court
the public is invited to a wine and cheese
reception at the Seaforth Legion. The wine
and cheese will be held from 8 p.m. until
10 p.m., and there will be slides and
displays showing what the Mainstreet Pro-
gram has done in Seaforth.
marketplace."
BIA Chairman Bob Fisher says the-
Mainstreet program did work in Seaforth
and "the proof of it working is that the
town has agreed to carry it on with the
hiring of a new co-ordinator Catherine
Vida,"
Miss Vida is the recently hired Develop-
ment Co-ordinator who has signed a three-
year contract with the Town of Seaforth to
take on -a full-time position in Town Hall
performing many of the duties formerly
done by the Mainstreet Coordinator. Her
correct title is Commercial Heritage
Economic Development Co-ordinator and
Administrative Assistant.
Asked if the Mainstreet Program has
helped the BIA Mr. Fisher responds: "Yes.
The merchants seem keener and more en-
thused. There is better organization of the
BIA, and of the marketing of the town in
general. It (the BIA) is better than it was
three years ago."
I think Tom Lemop got people .pretty -
well motivated," commented Mayor Hazel
Hiidebraud.
'"To get started on the
Streetscape Program was a main item,
and we have got started on it. Stores are
all pretty well filled and there are few
vacancies." Mrs. Hildebrand also noted
that the Mainstreet, program has for her
increased her personal awareness and ap-
preciation of heritage buildings.
Mrs. Hildebrand says Seaforthites did
appreciate the Mainstreet program. "Of
course you can't please everyone, but in
general people have liked it OK
