St. Columban played four soccer games in six days - one league game and three challenge cup games All four games were played in London and St Columban won 3 and tied one St Columban travelled to London on Wednesday August 16 to play London Curinga in a league game. London Curina scored early, but St. Columban did not let this effect their play. The team continued to play excellent soccer and tied the game when Dean Martin headed m a cor- ner kick by Bob Lumley . St. Columban had several scoring chances to take the lead but could not put one in the net. The game ended in a 1 to 1 tie St. Columban was also awarded a win tor the game which London Apollo did not show up for- in St Columbar. or. August The other three games St Columban played last week were all Challenge Cup games - playoff games All eight teams in the London league were automatically in the playoffs. The first round had teams playing each other as a result of drawing teams out of e hat. Only the winners of the first round went on to the semi-finals and only the winners of the semi-finals played off in the final for the Challenge Cup St. Columban played London Apollo in the first round last Tuesday, August 15 in London. St Columban played a very strong game which earned them a 2 to 0 win. Both goals were scored by Shane Davenport. The victory earned St. Colum ban the right to play in the semi-finals St. Columban travelled to London on Saturday. August 19 to play London Croatia in the semi -finale The S: Columban players knew they would have to play their best game of the year in order to beat London Croatia, a:• Croatia has.lost only one game all year St. Columban came out very strong and scored an earl' goal, off the foot of Shane Davenport The first hall ended ou'II Find It At... GODERICH 524-6901 with St. Columban leading 1 to 0 St. Columba° continued to play ex- cellent soccer in the second half and was beating London Croatia to the ball evert time St Columban's aggressive play paid off when they were awarded a penalty shot Ren, Murray made no mistake in putting it in the net Croatia began to press but St Colum - ban's defense stood tall and refused to let Croatia score. Shane Davenport scored once again near the end of the game, and it ended in a well deserved 3 to 0 victory for St. Columban The victory put St Columban in the final the next day - Sunday August 20. against London Curinga The St Columban players were vert excited to be in the final but they were also tired as this was the fourth game in six days London Curinga came out strong and aggressive. However. it was Si. In the three =playoff games St. Colum - ban did -not allow a single goal because of the excellent 'goal tending 'by Jason Dietz and 'because of the "iron curtain" consisting of Sean Melady, Mike Murray, Jason Sehoonerwaerd, Dave Kelly and Adam Ripley. Coach Tony 'Arts commented that he was proud of 'his 'players, each and every one of them, and hsaid she 'knew they could win if his team 'played the 'way they are capable of 'playing. And that's exactly what they did. Team members of St. Columban's under 18 Challenge Cup Champions are: Goaltender: Jason 'Dietz, Defense: Sean Melady, Mike Murray, Jason Schooner- woerd, Dave Kelly, Adarn Ripley ; Halfbacks: Rem Murray, Dean Martin, Terry Sloan, Bob Lumley: Forwards Jason Cooper, Trevor Fortune, Bryan Corriveau, Shane Davenport, Steve Ryan. Jason Rodney, Brad Carter and Coach Tony Arts. St. Columban plays its last regular season game next Wednesday, August 30, in St. • Columban against Sarnia Surf at 6:30. Exeter scored four runs in the first inn- ing, four more in the second, seven in the third, six in the fourth and three in the fifth. Seaforth scored its only runs in the first, two of them on a home rain by Jerrt Feeney. Other hitters in the game for Seaforth were Bill Dale, Jerry Wright, Marty Bedard, Nesbitt and Crocker, each with one hit. EXETER 17-SEAFORTh 2 Thursday's game went much the same as Tuesday's, with Exeter taking a decid- ed lead early into play, and building on it throughout the game. Darryl O'Connell started on the mound for the Merchants and pitched two and one-third innings before being relieved by Bill Dale. O'Connell allowed nine runs on nine hits, walked one batter and struck out one. Dale pitched one-third of an inning, allowing eight runs on six hits, and walk- ing two batters and striking out one. Ray Anstett finished up on the mound, allowing no runs on two hits, and striking out three hatters. Exeter scored its 17 runs on 17 hits, walked three tunes and struck out five times.. Express players committed two er- rors .and left six wen on base. Seaforth scored two runs on four hits, walked nonce, xatcuck -out seven tunes, and committed two errors and left five men on base. Seaforth scored one run .in the second in- ning and one in the sixth. Exeter scored four runs in the second inning and 13 runs in the third. "We were outepitched, -out-hit and out- classed in this series," commented coach Marc Robinet. "It was a tough way to end the season, but Exeter is a :great .ball team. They have a lot of .talent: and it puzzles us that they didn't apply to 'go C ;and .take a challenge on. After all ;they have won the D cham- pionship twice 'in the. last three years." As for .the ,Merchants, Robinet said they'll try ,again ;next year, and. thanks the fans :and the sponsors for their support throughout the :season.
