Gerard Meidinger came second and will
participate in the provincial tournament at
Trenton on September 9. The Seniors team
lost by one stroke and the other team played
well -abut were too far down the list.
Also last Saturday, a trio of lawn
bowlers participated in the Provincial
Legion Lawn Bowling tournament. The
names of these players were Jack Muir,
John Patterson and Tom Phillips. This
trio came third in the trebles which is
very good considering the scope of Pro-
vincial competition.
This coming Saturday the seniors golf
tournament will be held at the local golf
course. For tee -off times phone Linda Grid-
zak. Prizes will be given later in the after-
noon at the legion. Anyone over 50 years of
age can qualify, but please put your name
orrthe list provided.
Forty-four years ago on August 15 (yester-
day) the Japanese surrendered to the Allies
ending the war in the Pacific, freeing the
prisoners of war, some who had been
prisoners for three and four years. Canada
had many service men in these prisons,
some who were starved to death by their
captors and many more who died early
deaths from injuries resulting from treat-
ment from their Japanese guards.
Saturday, August 19 is the 47th anniver-
sary of the Dieppe raid where so many
Canadians were sent to their deaths in a raid
which is still considered by many as very
controversial.
There is a Drumhead service being held in
Listowel on Sunday, August 20 if any
members are interested.
Members in the hospital reported by sick
and visiting chairman Henry Ziler are
Gavin Gemmel, Angus MacLean and Don
Horne. We hope they will be out soon.
The Branch was sorry to hear of the death
of Comrade. John Walsh last week. A Legion ,
Memorial service was held last Tuesday
evening in Stratford. To his wife Agnes and
his family we offer sympathies in their loss
of a husband and father.
They grow not old as we that are left grow
old.Age shall not weary them nor the
years condemn. At the going down of the
sun and in the morning we will
remember them. Gordon Scott. PRO.
