YIKES - Two St. Columban Pee Wee players protect themselves as an opposing player hammers the ball in their direction
Corbett photo
Peewees lose
The Lucan and District Soccer League
Peewee championship tournament was held
in St. Coluniban on Saturday, August 12. It
was a round robin tournament with Exeter,
Grand Bend and Lucan in Group I while St.
Columban, Nairn and Ilderton were in
Group II.
ST. COLUMBAN 5 — NAIRN 0
St. Columban's first game of the tourna-
ment was against fourth place Nairn. St.
Columban controlled this game from the
start and won 5-0. Steve Bicknell had a big
game scoring four times. Mike Watt added a
single goal while Jeff Ryan registered the
shut -out.
ST. COLUMBAN 4 — ILDERTON 0
St. Columban peewees's claimed their se-
cond shut -out of the game with Jeff Ryan in
goal. Steve Hicknell tallied twice in this con-
test while Mike Watt and Pat Cook chipped
in with a goal apiece.
This win put the peewees against Exeter
in the championship final. Exeter also went
undefeated in their group in the tournament.
Exeter is the only undefeated team in the
`peewee division of the Lucan and District
soccer league and in the three regular
season game these two teams played each
other, Exeter outscored St. Columban 19-3. M
EXETER 5 — ST. COLUBAN 4
The St. Columban Peewees' knew that if
they were to beat Exeter they would have to
play their best game of .the season, wh"
they did, taking Exeter to overtime.
Exeter scored first in this game but Ste -
Hicknell's head ball into the corner of the
net from a perfect cross by Wayne
Schoonderweord, tied the game. Exeter
replied before the first half ended putting St. .
Columban down 2-1 heading into the second
half.
The second half saw St. Columban play
the best soccer of the season. Their ag-
gressive playing caused some un-
characteristic Exeter turnovers and Wayne
Schoonerweord capitalized on one, tying the
game before regulation time ended.
The two five minute overtime halves were
closely played with no team gaining the ad-
vantage. This set the stage for the most ex-
citing play for the fans but the most dreaded
championship by penalty shot
by the goaltenders - penalty shots.
Five players were chosen from each team
to take penalty shots, first a St. Columban
player, then an Exeter player, Mike Coyne
and Wayne Schoonderweord scored for St.
Columban while three Exeter players
scored for Exeter giving Exeter the "A"
Championship.
Referee Wayne Ryan did an excellent job
all day and is to be commended.
St. Columban peewee team members are:
Mike Coyne, Mike Weber, Mike Smale, Mike
Watt, Mike Devereaux, Mike Moylan, John
Moylan, Jim Crowley, Jeff Flanagan, Jeff
Ryan, Joe Murray, Joe Van Bakel, Wayne
Schoonderweord, Pat Cook, Steve Vanden
Hengal, Steve Hicknell, Shawn Vosper, Bill
Ryan. Peewee coach is Bill Vosper.
