The shuttle bus runs 45 minutes before and 45 They're never too young to start There's always an element of disbelief expressed when a little tyke belts a drive over the water hazard and into the mid- dle of the first fairway. Struggling adult golfers quickly comment, "That's the age to learn!" "Wish I had started at that • age." Most of us agree that taking up golf at an early age is ideal. However, many children, parents, and clubs, are unsure just how to pursue junior golf to everyone's benefit. It's extremely important to have the 3 basic components working together for the best results. The area .golf club, the parents, and the children must all work together. The end result is a happy and skilled junior golfer a rewarded parent, and a busy suc club. ON THE GREENS TOWN SE N D minutes after the game. Certainly busy clubs need some time restrictions so that the work- ing adults can get their game in during weekends and evenings without long waits on the tee. Unfortunately, many courses are totally unflexible and the result is empty courses when the weather is too hot, cold, or wet, for the usual Doig ant Pepper win men's pairs "The Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club hosted a men's pairs tournament last Wednesday under very sunny hot skies. In first place with 3 wins plus 52 was the team of Sandy "Doig (lead) and Sandy Pepper (skip) from the 'Seaforth Club.. Second place went to Peter Falk and partner of the Hanover club with 3 wins plus 44. Third place went to Sid Bartlett and partner of Elmwood Club Lon- don with 2w plus 52. Fourth went to Clinton's Elmer Murray and Don Haines with 2w plus 50 plus 1, and the consolation prize went to Oliver Pryce and Clara Reith of Seaforth. —On Wednesday, July 12 Seaforth will again be hosting a mixed trebles tournament with first prize being donated by the Seaforth Legion. Play starts at 10:30 a.m. and it is hoped there will be a good entry of Seaforth players. Seaforth bowlers have been active in out of town tournaments. In mixed pairs at Brussels two weeks ago Neil and Edna Bell won second prize, Sandy and Gladys Doig placed third and Eileen Adamson and Sandy Pepper were ninth. Last Thursday at Brussels Thelma Coombs and Sandy Doig won second, and Eileen Adamson and Sandy Pepper were fourth. In ladies pairs at Lucknow Olive Papple and Mary Finlayson won first with 3w plus 53 op 6. Carol Carter were first prize win- ners with 3w plus 43 on 1. In men's pairs Neil Bell and Fred Tilley placed fourth and on Saturday a number of bowlers completed in Mitchell in their M. and M. mixed trebles tournament. Local jitneys and afternoon bowling are still being well attended and on Tuesday a number of ladies are going to Goderich ladies pairs sponsored by Home Hardware. Good bowling to all. So what if it's Saturday morning? If there's no one on the course to hold up why not let the juniors out anyway? Be flexible. Play it by ear. Your young golfers will benefit as will your club. Clubs should take a closer look at how they discriminate against players. Forget the age factor. Use the handicap factor. On a busy Sunday when the starter needs someone to fill out a foursome, don't overlook the kid who's been putting on the practise green for 2 hours. He may only be 10 but ' handicap may be close to his age. Il, certainly wouldn't hold anyone back, he'd love to play with some adults, and after their initial hesitation most adults realize that golf is a game where age barriers are irrelevant. This also encourages juniors to improve their skills and lower their handicaps. Clubs can also provide a weekly junior time when juniors receive instruction priority on the course and some competi- tion and social interaction. The instruc- tion should concentrate on the fundamen- tals and include education on golf etti- quette, rules, and safety. Rewards and awards can be given in various ways to offer encouragement and reeognition. The local pro should also assist with 'club fitting. This is one of the most im- portant areas of junior golf. Parents and children are encouraged to use the pro's knowledge to fit cutdown second hand clubs or new junior sets. The pro can also teach the youngster the ins and outs of caddying. Although the power cart has done away with the need for many cad dies, the knowledge gained by caddying is beneficial and often special events of- fer the youngster a chance to use this knowledge for mutual benefit. The Gold Club can also assist with junior development on the course. Special junior tees will shorten many holes to a reasonable length for the little ones. A special junior score card can be used modifying the course by reducing the round to only 5 holes. Juniors can use this card to shoot their own "junior par". A practise area is a must for kids. Many kids will hang around all day chipping, putting and hitting buckets of balls. It's also the perfect place to send them when the course is extra busy. By taking your child to the course, or practise range, and by setting a fine ex- ample on the course, you're making a major contribution to your child's golfing future. Let the child govern the length of time on the course or the degree of "for- mal" instruction/education needed. It should be a fun game. If an interest is shown in lessons or joining a junior league then encourage participation in group lessons and clinics. This format is ideal for a child's motivation. Private lessons are better for skill development but private lessons often take the fun out of the game for the very young. A wait and see attitude is best before booking a series of private lessons. Finally the parent can assist the youngster in his enjoyment of golf by starting him with the right equipment. It's not necessary to spend a fortune on a full set of clubs and a fancy bag. It is necessary to keep the equipment basic and to make sure it fits the child. Most Pros recommend starting out the very young with only one chib. This could be a five or seven iron - something with enough loft to get the ball in the air easi- ly. For the little golfer (under six) one club prevents a lot of problems. No deci- sions are needed re. what club, no bag is needed, the club is seldom lost because it's never laid down, and the child can keep up with a patient parent. Eventually they can graduate to a three club set. Usually this will consist of a three wood, five iron, and a putter all cut down in size. As the child becomes more skilled more clubs can be added. Keeping it sim- ple is important. Clubfltting for youngsters is not just a matter of cutting off your old driver and giving it to your aspiring Jack Nicklaus. There are some important points to consider. • Always allow enough loft. Never cut down a wood with less loft than a three or an iron with less loft than a five. The key is to get the child hitting the ball into the air. • Use clubs with flexible shafts because the shorter you cut it, the stiffer the flex. Most ladies' clubs are a better choice. • The club will not only be stiffer but lighter and if it's too light the child will just pick it up instead of rotating with it. Sometimes a little lead tape on the head will help this problem. • Grip size is important. For small hands the 'bottom half of a regular grip can be used. • The club must have the' right he and so length is very important. Before cut- ting off the shaft observe • where you clubs come to on your abdomen when you take your normal stance. Measure your child's to eonie tto the same area on him. Add an inch 'for ;growth.
