On June 5, the Presbyterian Church
Women held a birthday party in recogni-
tion of their 99 years in service to the
church. There were 50 persons in atten-
dance from Hensall, Exeter, Seaforth and
Kippen churches.
President Kathy Bell welcomed the
guests in a fitting manner. Following a
hymn and prayer: the worship portion of
the evening was taken by Bev Moir and
Marilyn Campbell. Their theme em-
phasized the importance of family: love
and marriage: love for others and above
all, love for God, If we love others, God
will help us.
Marlene Bell gave a very interesting
story of the years of women in the
P.C.W. In 1890, Mrs. Phair was president
of the Huron Presbytery: First president
of the young ladies Mrs. Dunlop and Mrs.
Harry Arnold (for years the group was
named the Arnold Circle). Alice Walker
was also president. In January 1984, the
groups amalgamated to become the
Presbyterian Church Women. All work
together. Some presidents were: Emily
Edwards, Hannah Workman, her
daughter Mabel Stanlake, Mrs. Sam
Dougall, Maggie May Campbell, Henriet-
ta Brown, Florence Hyde, Dorothy Taylor
and Margaret Hoggarth. This short
history was very interesting and many
remember the presidents who have pass-
ed on.
The guest speaker, and a capable one,
was Margaret Strang who is president of
the London Synodical of the Presbyterian
Church. She recalled the olden days when
the ladies held their meetings in their
homes; hats and gloves were worn„ and
how times have changed. Women have
more opportunities now in voicing opi-
nions and helping in the churches and
communities. She recounted the events of
the recent seminar at the University of
Western Ontario. Ladies from all the pro-
vinces in Canada were present. Mrs.
Strang told of the first W.M.S. being in
Montreal 125 years ago and the western
division was formed 75 years ago.
Kim Reddick of Zurich who is also in-
volved with the Huron Country
Playhouse, sang a solo "Whither Thou
Goest". She was accompanied on the
piano by Carolyn Love. Kim was thanked
by Jan Baker. President Kathy Bell
thanked Mrs. Strang and on behalf of the
P.C.W. of Hensall, presented here with a
plant. Two former presidents of R.C.W.
(Hensall) who have left the church were
called forward and Marlene Bell thanked
them fittingly for their services and
presented them with a gift. These ladies
are Florence Hyde, of Exeter and
Margaret Hoggarth also of Exeter.
The evening was pleasant and attended
by so many old friends who renewed
aquatntances with everyone. The guests
were served a lunch before which Rev.
Henderson, Exeter asked the blessing. It
is hoped that the women may be able to
have a great party in 1990. Imagine: 100
years of service. Happy Birthday P.C.W.
of Hensall Cannel Church.
SUNDAY SERVICE
Rev. Mark Gaskin, the minister for Ex-
eter Caven Church and Hensall Carmel
Church -was the leader in the service of
June 11.
The sermon entitled - Life meets Death,
had much deep meaning for all who have
been in sorrow over the death of Loved
ones. They were assured that death is on-
ly an interruption from this life to a
much happier one, to which we must all
go sometime.
Unfortunately, the congregation was not
so large as usual and it was thought
perhaps this was due to many being on
vacation or working on the land.
However, it is sincerely hoped this is not
an indication of days to come as the ser-
vices are most interesting and
informative.
Following the service the P.C.W. held a
short meeting regarding a future mission
of their dedication of service to those less
fortunate than ourselves.
