The:tradition of rewarding,exceUerece'in
Seaforth high School athletics-was•,carried
this year as -the Seaforth District High
School Athletic Awards Achieve .nt Night
was held on June 7.
The five most prestigious awai ds, the
recognition awards, were won by the follow-
ing outstanding high school athletes
® The Deb Dawson Sportsmanship Award
was won by Crystal Whyte.
Karsten Carroll and Andy 'Ball 'were
. rewarded for having competed In three
inter -scholastic sports for three years.
e Tammy Nash won the Maryann Weiler
Award for Athletic and Academic
Excellence.
e The Male Athlete of the Year award was
shared by Andy Ball and Paul Menary.
o Two Female Athletes of the Year were
also chosen - Anne Robinson and Crystal
Whyte.
Twenty-three other awards were issued
for excellence in particular sports.
BASKETBALL
Susan Rowcliffe won an -award for team
leadership and enthusiasm in midget girls
basketball; Lisa Henderson was Rookie of
the Year for junior girls basketball; Anne
Robinson was Most Valuable Player in
senior girls basketball. Paul Menary Was
the senior boys basketball MVP, while' the
junior boys basketball MVP was Brent van
den Akker. The most dedicated player in
midget boys basketball • was Eric Johnston.
VOLT .FYBALL
The MVP in junior boys volleyball was
Brent van den Akker, while. Darren Akey
took this honor in senior boys volleyball.
Sherry Harburn was recognized for team
spirit and leadership in junior girls
volleyball, and Amy van den Akkerwasthe
Most Consistent Player in senior .girls
volleyball,
:HOCKEY
For the first season in many, SDHS'put a
hockey team on the ice. While the team did
not win many games this year, coach Jim
Empringham says the school team may
catch the interest of some of Seaforth's
Rosebuddies four.

The third Meeting of the McKillop No.
1 Rosebuddies was held on May -30 at
Baker's Nursery in Bayfield. Members
learned about .many new lands of shrub-
bery and also got a personal tour of the
nursery. Mr. Baker has a very large
variety of trees and shrubs.
• Members enjoyed the field trip very
much and every member came home
satisfied at learning a little more about
landscaping.
The fourth meeting was held on June 6
at the Stewart's residence.
The rollcall was taken and later
members named formal and informal
plants. They also learned the dos and
don'ts of planting and watering. There
were two short presentations by:the youth
leaders and the meeting was adjourned.

.Ladies Aid members
hear talk on Australia
The Ladies' Aid of First Presbyterian
Church held their meeting on Tuesday,
June 6 with 10 members and three guests
present. President Mary Riley conducted
the business part of the meeting and roll
call was answered by each bringing .a
Canadian -made object.
A card and gift was presented to Viola
Lawson in honor of Viola and Lorne's
.50th wedding anniversary. Mary McClure
and Dorothy Papple were in charge of
the program and Dorothy Williams gave
a very interesting tack .on her recent trip
to Australia. Mary McClure, Dorothy
Papple and Edythe Coleman all took part
in a reading pertaining to :the theme of
their program which was "travel". Lunch
was served by the program committee.
The next meeting will be in September.

HONORED ATHLETES - SDHS "held Its annual athletic awards banquet recently to

Karsten Carroll was selected as the MVP
on :the -hockey team, and Dave Kelly was
. given'.the Golden Bear Spirit Award.
SOCCER
In .girls soccer Sherry Harburn was
selected for a Team Leadership and Desire
award. The MVP in junior boys soccer was
Greg Preszcator, while the MVP in senior
,boys soccer was Andy Ball. The Brian
Flanagan 'Memorial Award for dedication to
senior boys soccer was given to Jeff
Gemmell.
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
Karsten Carroll and Tanury Nash were
,selected to attend the Ontario Student
Leadership Camp, and the Bark Lake
athletic camp will be attended by Dan
Bachert and Sherry Harburn.
Heather Ritchie and Mike Holmes were
rewarded for dedication to track and field,
Lori Bruner won Most Improved Athlete,
Andy Ball was selected as the Most En-
thusiastic Tennis Player, and the Boys Low
Gross award went to golfer Karsten Carroll.
The guest speaker at the banquet this year
was Dave Murray who graduated from
SDHS in 1984, and more recently from WLU,
and who has been active in sports in
Seaforth.
SDHS staff members Janice Rose and
Ray Verschuere are leaving the school next
year and were acknowledged for their con-
tributions to the athletic program. Miss
Rose gave life to the senior girls soccer
team, while Mr. Verschuere was involved
with junior boys basketball.
