Board will address budget issue
The 1989 provincial budget will have anaf-
fect on Education in this community, and
the Huron County Board of Education is
holding a special meeting on June 26 at 7:30
to estimate what those effects will be and
what can be done about them.
"We think there are some issues in the
throne speech and budget that will impact
on our board and should be looked at," says
Board Chairman John Jewitt.
Mr. Jewitt expects discussion will centre
around three main topics introduced by the
budget. One of these is junior kindergarten
and the effect it will have on Huron County.
"We certainly don't have room in a lot of our
schools," said the chairman, adding that
lowering class sizes has already accounted
for most free classroom space.
The streaming of students into general,
academic, and other areas of study will be a
second popular topic. And on a financial
note the trustees will talk about the impact
of pooling business.and commercial assess-
ment. "Separate schools will now get funds
from that pot, where in the past it always
went to the public system."
Trustees have not ignored these topics up
until now, but will be discussing them for the
first time in a formal public session.
"We'll, be asking trustees what direction
they want us to go," explains Mr. Jewitt.
"We want to make sure that the Board's
thoughts are the thoughts we are putting
forward."
Mr. Jewitt said trustees may consider a
formal response to the provincial govern-
ment outlining the Huron Boards position on
the budget issues.
McKillop Township opposed to county spending
McKillop Township Council has indicated
its opposition to the 19 per cent county
budget increase for 1989.
Councillors voted to support the Town of
Exeter in its opposition to the budget, par-
ticularly $390,000 which is being set aside for
phase two of a waste management study,
and money budgeted for the renovation of
county buildings so they can be leased to the
provincial government. The letter from Ex-
eter says money spent by county council
shouldbe for a direct benefit for the people
of Huron, and not to get the county in the
landlord business.

this year, and $13,409 for the beginning . of
the calcium chloride this year.

the second of four installments, and a tile
drainage debenture worth $32,949.
Council endorsed a resolution by .the
municipality of South Crosby petitioning the
provincial government to increase the fun-
ding to the Unconditional Grants Program
by five per cent for this year. There has
been no increase in the program's funding
budgeted for this year.
POLICING COMMITTEE
The policing committee met recently and
issues the following advice:
Farm equipment left in fields overnight
should be parked as far back from roads as
possible to deter vandalism. The committee
was made aware of vandalism to equipment
and tires being slashed on equipment in a
neighboring township.
Parks are advised to leave no cigarettes
or cash in their booths overnight.
With the holidays approaching the com-
mittee would remind McKillop homeowners
to secure their premises before leaving.
And back roads in the township will con-
tinue to be under surveillance for Drinking
Drivers.
Two to seek warden's seat
McKillop Township Reeve Marie
Hicknell will again seek the warden's
chair in Huron County.
Also looking to lead the county council
in 1990 is Hay Township Reeve Lionel
Wilder, who was first of the two to an-
nounce his candidacy at the June
meeting of county council.
The decision will be made through a
vote of county council members at the
December meeting.
Hicknell ran without success last year
against Bayfield Reeve Dave Johnston,
the current warden. She reminded coun-
cil that her intention to again seek the
position had been made clear last fall.
This is Wilder's first run at the office.
Grey Reeve Leona Armstrong is the
only woman to have held the office. She
*as warden in 1986.
