that he found it hard to believe people in the
township would start a petition over the
spending of $50,000 for a backhoe, when hun-
dreds of thousands of dollars was spent on a
pit, and over a million dollars spent on a
landfill site without there being such a
public outcry.
"They snouldn't have voted for me if they
didn't want progress," said Mr. Cantelon.
"They voted for you because they thought
you'd listen to them," responded Mrs.
Wallace.
Mr. Cantelon countered by saying that the
petition doesn't represent a large percen-
tage of Tuckersmith's 2,900 population, and
he'd be more willing to listen to a greater
number of ratepayers.
Following council's seeing the petition,
Mrs. Wallace made a motion "that we
.reassign the backhoe funds to other road
projects."
•
The motion was seconded by Mr.
McGrath, but was defeated when coun-
cillors Dejong and Cantelon voted against it.
No decision could be made without the full
council, and the meeting was adjourned
with no action planned to be taken on the
backhoe until the next regular meeting of
council on June 13, 1989.

Rash of car thefts reported
Huron County Crime Stoppers Inc.,
along with the Goderich Town Police and
the Goderich Ontario Provincial Police,
are asking for your assistance to STOP a
rash of vehicle thefts in the area.
Remember summer and the warm
weather are here and car thefts tend to
increase due to the fact that many people
leave their cars unlocked with the keys
available.
Don't tempt a young thief, or be the
cause of a youth stealing a car and
becoming involved in a chase situation
which could cause an accident or serious
injuries to the youth who steals it or to
an innocent bystander. REMOVE YOUR
KEYS and LOCK YOUR CAR.
