CARMEL PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCH
On Sunday, May 28, Carmel Presbyterian
Church celebrated its 141st anniversary
with many old friends and acquaintances
and former members h attendance.
Rev. Mark Gaskin in troduced the guest
minister Rev. George V tis, who had been a
former and very respected pastor here from
1959-1960. Rev. Vais told of his many ex-
periences in church work since he left Hen-
sall; about his family and the many people
who have kept in contact with him. It in-
teresting to note that for some time he lived
across the street from Mr. and Mrs. Elmer
Car,^bell, the former being the son of Mr.
an, rs. Percy Campbell of Hensall.
F otlowing the opening greetings, prayers
and hymn, Margaret Shortreed of Brussels
sang a beautiful solo "Because He Lives".
Miss Shortreed sings in the Melville
Presbyterian Church, Brussels and with the
Seaforth Barbershop Group, the Harmony
Hi-Lites.
Following the prayer and responsive
readings the choir sang "The Lily of the
Valley". The major part of the music was
provided by Carolyn Love at the organ and
Dorothy Taylor at the new piano -organ. This
extra accompaniment added to the ardor of
the singing.
Rev. Vais gave a very impressive sermon
entitled "The Man Who Did Not Miss A
Thing". He emphasized the fact that An-
drew was the least mentioned .of the
disciples but in our time there are more
churches named after him than all the
others. We can all take a lesson from his
words. Following a hymn and prayer Miss
Shortreed sang another solo "We Have This
Moment". Her beautiful voice impressed
each and every one in attendance.
The usual closing exercises being over,
the people retired to the lower hall for a time
of fellowship and meeting with old friends. A
few words regarding Rev. Vais seem to be in
order at this time. He is at present pastor of
Leaside Church in the Presbytery of East
Toronto.
Rev. Vais was reared. in Bracebriddgge,
went to Wilfred Laurier University,
Waterloo for his B.A. received his Divinity
Degrees from Presbyterian College. George
has had successful pastorates in Galt, Hunt-
sville, Winnipeg (Man.) for 15 ye;irs and in
September of 1987 he began his work in
Leaside. George's wife, pall accompanied
him to Hensel: and a nt time was spent
by all.
