Golf as always, :sets fashion statement
Golf has always been touted as a fashion
sport. Long before. brightly colored track
suits and ski outfits were the norm, flam-
boyant dressers like Doug Sanders were
decorated fairways in their colorful attir;.
Today just about anything goes when it
comes to color and'style on the golf course.
For the fashion conscious, golf is a sport
where they can excel fn style if not in 'kill.
Although many styles are considered
"classic golf", influence from other sports
is infiltrating golf tashions. Year after year
the classic golf styles of front plaquet
pullover shirts, v -neck sweaters, Bermuda
shorts, and culottes provide the standard
golf wear. Each year these Manic looks.are
updated with new and exciting color com-
binations and more comfortable, easier to
care for, fabrics. Golfers demand comfort
and good wear as well as color and style.
They prefer looser abets and sweaters. and
shorts, slacks, or skirts with plenty of. give.
Pockets are a must. In recent years the
sweat suit revolution has been felt on the
golf course too. Although most golf courses
prohibit jogging pants, more stylish sweat
tops are being seen on the fairways. ire addi-
tion golf shoes with a decidedly sneaker look
are popular with many players.
One of the most significant fashion
changes on the golf course has been the ac-
cent on rainwear..Rainsuits for men and
women are no longer the standard navy
blue. ill fitting jacket and pants. Gone too, is
the noisy, steam bath material that caused
many players to wear their rainsuit only as
a fastresort. Now at the first drop ofrainthe
fairways are dottedwith players in brightly
colored, comfortable reinstalls that can be
worn on or off the course and double up for
jogging or skiing.
From the top of a golfer's head to the tap of
his toes, hey or she can be totally color coon
• dinated;in ;comfortable,nstyliah•!golf gear.
• Regardlessrof your akill'1evelyou'can'cer-
tainiy look like a pro.
Most golf attire is not inexpensive. After
all, you only get what you.payfor:andmost
, golfers pay a bit extra for good:quality. Golf
wear must be looked after properly or the
extra money spent will be wasted.
Hats and visors often become faded, and
soiled before golf season is half over. Some
headwear can be hand washed.in.mild soapy
water. A soft brush will loosen most soil.
Reshape the hat or visor -by hand paying.at-
tention to the brim. Then allow it to .dry
naturally. Stuffing hataand visors into .golf
bag pouches lessens their life as well as
their style in many cases.: Some visors: are
equipped with removable washable bands ...
a greatidea for busy golfers.
,Shirts, sweaters, slacks, and shorts,
should be treated according.to.thelabels at-
tached. Many styles are made in combina-
tion fabrics.for comfort andease of carebut
for people who prefer ,allmatural materials
like cotton, lambswool, . cashmere, 'etc.,
many proshops carry ,these .items too. Con-
sult the,proshop personnel before purchas-
ing an iterdtomake sure that the material is
what you're looking for. Treating /golfwear

drawer or on a shelf.
Gloves are items that many golfers spend
a good deal of money on each summer, but
abuse to no end. Gloves come in leather,
syntan, and combinations of : both these
natural and man-made materials. Right
handed golfers wear a golfglove on their' eft
hand, the opposite is true for left handed
players. The most popular color .is white,
followed by tan.and beige. Golfers likethese
neutral colors that match any outfit and
don't stain hands and clothes. For the more
adventurous there's a huge selection of
fashion colors to finish off that special: outfit.
Gloves should fit very snugly. A loose fitting
glove can cause your grip to slip and will'
also wear out faster due to abrasion.
Because gloves must fit well they come in a
great variety of sizes including "cadet"
sizes designed .specifically for: people with
short fingers. When trying on -a glove made
a, fist with your hand before .doing ;up the
velero:and 'dome fasteners. Take your time
when putting a golf glove :on. 'Work it on
Fingers -First and, don't yank it at thewrist.
The • thumb should go in.Jast. On /hot and
sticky :days a little:baby powder helps pre-
vent tearing. Keep your finger nails, ahort
takeoff your jewellery: and your ,glove will
last,longer too.
After a round store': the glove flat away
from the,heat:andsun. These tend:to,dryout
the :glove. A plastic bag mill keep''theglove
moist. If -you =veplayed lrtthe ram„shape the
:glove and allow it to dry'nattrraliy. 'There
are many washable gloves .on the market
and it's .great to;have.severalgloves to -ex -
change when the weather is bad, or just to
be in style.
Your rainsuit requires a little care and
feeding too. Check'the label for cleaning in-
structions. After a shower chances are
you've rolled it up and stuffed it into your
golf bag. At the end of the round shake it out
and hang it up to dry. Otherwise a wrinkled
and mildew covered suit may greet you on
the next rainy golf day.
RULE OF THE WEEK: 1-3/2 Agreement.
to concede short putts.
Q. In a match, the two players agree in ad-
vance to concede all putts within aspeciffled
length. Is this contrary to rule 1-3?
A. Yes. The players agreed to exclude the
operation of Rule 1-1 and should be dis-
qualifiedunder Rule 1-3. Under Rule 2-4 the
only stroke which may be conceded is the
"next stroke" and it cannot be conceded in
advance.
