Seaforth ercha Despite a delay of four days, the Seaforth Merchants Senior Mens Baseball team, finally opened its season Thursday night. And it did so successfully, recording a 4-3 win over Lakeside. "It was a good start for us," commented Player/Manager Marc Robinet. is wig omemo "It was nice to get the sason going on the right foot." Robinet added the team's pitching and defence were "great" in game one, but said the offense, as expected, might take "a little bit of time to get rolling," Marty Bedard started an the mound for CAUGHT FLY - Merchants third baseman Graham Nesbitt tracked a pop fly being blown by high winds almost all the way to second base, but it ended up safely in the glove of second baseman John Cairns Jr. Shortstop Jerry Wright left it in their hands. •In spite of the weather Thursday the Merchants completed five innings and won their v CLU 4 Main Street, SEAFORTH '527-2300 ever 4-3 the Merchants in this outing, and went three innings. He allowed three runs on four hits, walked two batters and struck out three. Scott Driscoll came in as relief and got the win after two innings. He gave up no runs on no hits, and walked one batter. Ironically both teams scored three runs in the first inning, and the game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth, when Seaforth scored the winning run on an error. Hitters for Seaforth were Driscoll with two, and 'Joe Aubin, Graham Nesbitt and Jerry Wright, each with one. The Merchants play tonight iii Strathroy and again Friday in Lakeside. Their next home game is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against Walkerton. All home games are played at Merchant Field at the Seaforth and District High School grounds. 'Queen -skilled by Kid's Maze The Seaforth Ladies Recreational Softball teams played their second games of the season on Tuesday, May 9. The early game saw the Queens came up against the Kids Kloze Killers. Despite an all team effort and doubles hit by Mary Margaret Nash and Mary -arm Van Stone, and a home run by Judy Mason in the sixth, the -Queens lost with only seven runs to their credit. The Kids Kloze Killers scored 23. The late game of the evening was a "squeaker" with the -McNichol team coming out on top -with a score of 18 runs. Their op- ponents Ken Smith, were right on:their tails with 16 -runs. Lisa Preszeator hit a triple for McNichol with teammates Diane Bennett, Carol Wheeler, Karen' Wettlaufer and Carol Bennewies, hitting doubles. Next week's action sees Ken Smith vs. the Kids.Kloze Killers for the early game and Queens vs. McNichol for the late. Lawn bowlers hear history The members of the Seaforth Ladies' and Mens Lawn Bowling Clubs met at the home of Fred and Betty Tilley on Wednesday, May 3. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the amalgamation of the two clubs into one with one executive. The vote was unanimous and the clubs joined forces with Jack Muir as President, Edna Bell first vice president, Betty Tilley secretary -treasurer, Marie Muir as her assistant and Mary Finlayson as assistant treasurer. The ladies held a cleaning bee last Thurs- day to •ready the clubhouse for the lawn bowling season and the lights and benches et cetera are now in place. Neil Bel has been busy cutting and preparing the greens and weather permitting lawn bowling will now be in full swing. To start the beginning of the club's 60th year, a banquet was held May 10 at the Seaforth legion Hall. Edna Bell brought greetings on behalf of the ladies and also read some memoirs of Lawn Bowling written by Frank Sills, a former member of the Seaforth merits club. Frank came from a lawn bowling family and his parents, grandmother and late wife, in addition to himself were all keen bowlers. Following are Frank's comments - "Over the years lawn bowling has been an integral part of sports in our community. It is not only a sport, but a great addition to the social life of everyone who has narticip tori - mixing all strata of society and provrtung a great deal of fun and amusement, as well -as giving much needed physical activity that helps both mind and body. Some people become more skilled in the art of lawn bowling than others, and this gives them a great . deal of satisfaction. Nevertheless, this is not the most important aspect of the game.
