During bis first year, he was 'red skirted' to preserve his four-year eligibility. That meant while he was required to train with theteam, he was not a registered member of its roster, and was therefore not official- ly part of the team. This year, however, Vercruyssen has quickly moved up the ranks and secured a position on the team's starting line=up. "For the first half of the season I was lucky to get a couple minutes of play time each game," admitted Vercruyssen. `But for the last 12 games I've played about 15 minutes per game and have been part of the starting line-up. For a freshman, I guess that's pretty good." This week, however, Vercruyssen, who studies Industrial Relations.at St. Joseph's Business School, will have to prove himself again. Ile will be one of many Canadians I try out far r ion I basketball team Invited to try out tor a place on Canada's developmental team for the 1992 Olym- pics, or the team destined for the World University Games, 'which will be held in Mexico City, later Utas summer. Because ofhts youth (20 years), andthe fact that he is still in university, Ver- cruyssen expects his best chances lie with making the team destined for the World University Games. Those expectations are backed by his coaching staff at St. Joe's. "My coach says I stand a pretty good chance," said Vercruyssen, "And I feel really confident. I intend to play the best I can." Regardless of the outcome though, Ver- cruyssen said he is grateful to the oppor- tunities being afforded him by the sport of basketball. "I'm enjoying myself, and the school season. It's gone by pretty quickly," he said, noting however, that it took him a while to adjust to being a university basketball player in the United States. "It's almost like being a celebrity sometimes. You play in front of 8,000 peo- ple sometimes and you're really put in the spotlight. There's more pressure put on RECREATION PREVIEW by (Recreation Director) Marty Bedard you," said. He added however that the attention' he's garnered as a basketball player hasn't af- fected the way fie approaches life. "It hasn't changed me," he said, then added jokingly, "Pm still the great person I've always been." "It (basketball)'s glyen me a great chance to see a lot of things and to meet a lot of people. I'm very excited about this try out. It's a great opportunity for me. And even if I don't make the team (and 1 THE 'HURON ;EXPOSITOR, MAY 10, 1089 — 38 plan togo out there end do'the best I can), it's agreat chance to meet new people, and to'see, the westeoast," added Veretuyssen. And if he should make the 'university team,Vercruyssen can NespectIo.rdo even more travelling in the next two months. Prior'to competing in !Mexico City June 5 to 18, Canada's team to the World Univer- sity Games will be taking a 12 -day trip to France and England, then will head to Col- oradoSprings for a final one-week training session before the competition.
