1 Perils of Persephone play will .Open Blyth Festival Therrlewestplayby Dan Needles, Perllsof Key Porter Books this Fall. Other plays showcased in the 15th an- Persephone-thestory of the Currie family (Walt's neighbours on the next concession road) 'will open the Blyth Festival 15th an- niversary season on June 16. "The Box Of- fice has only been open two weeks and several performances are approaching the sold -out level" says Joel Harris, General Manager of the Blyth Festival. The comedy centers on Eldon Currie, farmer and life- long resident of Persephone Township who hankers for the fame and glory of political life - until the night a truck carrying atomic waste comes hurtling into his ditch. The threat of a nuclear spill in his own backyard and the schemes of the provincial man- darins who descend upon his farm to help, provide the "man -who -would -be -reeve" with more experience than he ever dreamed possible! Dan Needles has experienced a varied career - former editor of Shelburne Free Press and Economist a southern Ontario weekly newspaper; assistant to various On- tario Cabinet Ministers at Queen's Park from 1976.81 and Public Affairs Director for Canada Life until 1988 when he left to pursue writing projects full-time. He makes his home in Collingwood with wife Heath and daughter Madeline where he raises sheep in his spare time. "When I began writing in 1974, a lot of what I grew up with was disap- pearing" says Needles. "It wasn't just that all the farms were being sold at exag- gerated prices, but that the community was breaking up. The way of life that had been there for 140 years was changing in ways that weren't benefitting anyone. The writing was really two-pronged, I wanted to hang on to what was disappearing and I wanted to make people realize what was being lost." Walt Wingfield and his neighbours in Persephone Township have become legen- dary thanks to writer Dan Needles and actor Rod Beattie who portrayed the Wingfield character on stage since 1985. Letter From Wingfield Farm and its sequel, Wingfield's Progress is playing at the Grand Theatre in London until May 6th and stars Rod Beattie as the entire cast including a horse, a clog, three women, noisy farm machinery and a host of men. Walt Wingfield never makes an appearance in the Blyth production of Perils of Persephone - lie's booked to perform shows (about 200 per year) until 1990 with a third Wingfield Follies planned for September. The Wingfield plays have been aired on CBC radio and the selected Letters from Wingfield Farm will be published by B d _S GLANVILLE - Art and Tracy (Wright) Glanville are pleased to announce the ar- rival of their first child, John Arthur Leslie, weighing 7 lbs., 10 ozs. at Stratford General Hospital on April 4, 1989.
