ANNIVERSARY SERMON $1 A YEAR IN ADVANCE The etgbty-eighth anniversary of the founding of the Independent Order of Oddfellows was fittingly celebrated at Wroxeter on Sunday afternoon last, when the members of Montana Lodge, augmented by visiting brethren from Teeswater, Brussels, Listowel and Wingham, and the members of Minerva Encampment, Wingham, attended divine service in the Methodist Church. Rev. Era. J. Ii Osterhout, B.A., B D., was the preacher for the occasion. Taking bis text from the first verse of the eighteenth chapter of I Samuel, the speaker dwelt on the subject of the motto of the Order, "Friend- ship, Love and Truth," dealing particularly with "Friendship." "To massy people," said the speaker, "and perhaps to a careless Oddfellow, these words mean very little, but to the true Oddfellow they stand for cardinal virtues which he is trying to incorporate into his life. These three virtues are sym- bolized by three links, which are inseparably bound together. Some of the noblest acts recorded in history, have resulted from, and some of the most wonderful deeds have been prompted by, friendship. Three kinds of friend- ship were referred to: That which gives pleasure to the giver; the friendship interest orand lastly the friendshipof virtue. of me setgain; y n There is no true friendship without confidence; true friendship is not gained by the sacrifice ot principle; character is not determined by the number. but by the quality, of our friends. There can be no true friendship without love, which is the great leveller of human society, and the progenitor of noble deeds; no true friendship without service. Fraternity without service to God and man is an empty name, and there is no true friendship that has notits basic principle in the friendship of Jeena Christ, The speaker closed an inspiring address by an eicgnent appeal on behalf of a better observance of the noble principles of the Order. After the service the brethren reassembled in the hall, when short congratulatory speeches were delivered by a number of the members, and the usual votes of thanks tendered. A few words in reference to the preacher on the above occasion, who is .well known to many of our readers. will perbaps be in order; Rev. Mr. Osterhout is the popular;and energetic pastor of the Wroxeter circuit of the Methodist Church. Ile is a native of Kent county, baying been born at Northwood, where he received his public school education. He afterwards attended the Ridgetown high School and the Chatham Collegiate Institute. Seven years ago he graduated with honors from Toronto Univer- sity, receiving the B.A. degree, and also received the B D. degree from Victoria University,,00mpleting both courses before Ms ordination. He was ordained to the work of the Methodist ministry at the meetiug of the London Confer - masa held in Wingham, His ministerial career has thus far been signally successful. Not only is he an earnest, eloquent and zealous preacher, but he is also a man among men, one who is ever ready to "put his hand to the plow" wherever a good work re to done; and whatever he undertakes he puts ha whole energy into. During his residence at Wroxeter, Rev.Mr.Osterhont has taken an active interest in the welfare of the place, and has been given positions of honor and responsibility. He has for years been an enthusiastio Oddfellow, and is for this term Noble Grand of Wroxeter Lodge. He is completing his three year term on the Wroxeter circuit, and bas received an invitation to Victoria street church, Goderich, which he has accepted, sub- ject to the approval of the Stationing Committee.
