'The annnalmeeting of the Staffa Women's
Institutes held at 'the township hall last
'Tuesday evening with Florence 'McPhail
'presiding. Seventeen members answered
the Tall call by'paying their fees, revealing
theirsecretpals and giving a suggestion for
ameeting intthe coming year. Everyone en-
joyed DoristMiller's comical reading.
During business a committee was named
to make the final arrangements for hosting
the 'Perth South District Annual in Main St.
United Church, Mitchell on Tuesday, May
16. Voting delegates for the district annual
are, Kay Smale, Roberta Templeman and
Joyce Vivian. Interesting reports were
given by the secretary, treasurer, program
co-ordinator, P.R.O. Tweedsmuir Curator,
-resolutions convenor and the sunshine com-
mitte, showing a very successful and ednc-
tional year.
The auditor's and nominating committee
reports were given. Florence McPhail in-
stalledthe officers for the year 1989-90. They

Joyce Vivian; 2nd vice president - Florence

two sisters, Patty Skinner and Susan
Heckman, Jill's nieces, Kristen and Court-
neySldnner carried in the gifts to Jill.
In her pleasing manner, Jill thanked
everyone for their lovely gifts and for com-
ing to the -shower.

After a meal at the Ginettes Restaurant
(meeting room) in Seaforth April 19 the
Walton Women's Institute members were
invited to Annie Reid's to hold their
meeting.
Marion Godkin presided for the business,
thanking Annie for her kind invitation. An-
nie was a member at Walton since the In-
stitute was formed in 1956. Marjorie Hum-
phries read minutes and gave the financial
report. The luncheon that day was quite a
success, when about 90 people enjoyed a
beef luncheon. Roll call was the paying of
membership fees. Correspondence was read
and dealt with. Several articles were
brought in for the reeychngdisplay at the
Huron -East District Annual to be -set ap at
the District Annual, May 9 at Brussels
Presbyterian Church by Ruth Axtmann. A
dateawas-set-to'have a practice for the skit
being put on during the morning 'session.
Delegates are Marion Godkin, Leona
McDonald and Helen Craig.Prograrnplann-
ing date has been changed to this 'Wednes-
day at 1 p.m. at the hall.
The Annual meeting followed with last
year's minutes and the year's financial
Report. The Auditor's -report was given by
Margery Huether. 'Helen Craig gave the
Program Co'trd nator's report followed by
the Tweedsmuir Curator's -report, prepared
by Jeanne Kirkby. Iletty McCall gave the
Public Relations Officer (P.R.O. )'report. in
the new businessrateswereset for the 'com-
ing year: Helen McKenzie installed the of-
ficers for The coming year and was
pre -"^ted with a plant.

Mr. and -Mrs. Oliver Hopson of Seeley's
Bay, Ontario and Mr. and Mrs, Harvey
Craig spent a few days last week with Mr.
and Mrs. C. Miller at North Tonawanda,
New York State, Mrs. Hopson is the former
Isabel Davidson of Walton.
Danny and Karen Achilles and Donnie of
Stratford spent the weekend at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Roily Achilles.
Manure applic,•>tson
research to be
conducted on farms
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority has received an $80,000 grant
from the Research Advisory Committee of
the Ministry of the Environment for one
year of water quality research. •
The purpose of the research is to study the
relationship between soil types, manure ap-
.plicationandthe;waterquality.:af-iltereceiv-
ing watercourse:"Through this research, a
rate of manure application will be deterruin-
ed which will not impair the water quality of
the receiving watercourse.
The research will be conducted on five
farms within the watershed of ,the Desjar-
dine Drain in Stephen Township. The same
custom applicator will apply the manure in
each of the months of May, August,
September, October and November. The
manure, soil and watercourse will all be
sampled for bacteria.
A B.C.A. employees, Donna Dean, Prin-
cipal Investigator and Mary Ellen Foran,
Research Advisory Committee Technician,
will conduct the research in consultation
with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and
Food and the Ontario Ministry of the
Environment.
