Employers needed for SDH' re-entry program
The re-entry program for women at with secretarial/clerical skills, Mr. Empr-

A pre -operational study is being done to February to June 1990 at no cost. Canada
Employment and Immigration pays wages
and benefits for the women attempting to re-
enter the workforce. The women will be
taught computer applications to offices in-
cluding Lotus, computer accounting, and
word processing, and will be taught
Business English and similar courses.
, Mr. Empringham says the re-entry pro -
determine the availability of clients to take
the program, the willingness of employers
to support the program, and the skills that
are needed in this area.
The re-entry program is a proposed pro-
ject to give women in the Seaforth area of-
fice procedures training and academic
upgrading which they need to make them
employable. The project would operate at
SDHS for the first semester, but in the se-
cond semester the women taking the project
would be located in actual working
environments.
In conducting the pre -operational study a
consultant will be touring Huron and Perth
Counties to look for employers, so
employers in this area may be contacted for
interviews.
SDHS principal Jim Empringham is op-
timistic that the study will show a need for
re-entry in the Seaforth area, and that the
program will be approved by Canada
Employment and Immigration.
"Hopefully the study will verify need, and
we have been assured that we have priority
in this region and it is our expectation that
we will be able to offer this program in
September," says Mr. Ennpringham.

gram participants may be hired on a perma-
nent basis by the employer they are match-
ed with, after the project expires.
"The idea is that the people who will be
taken on will become full-time employees,
but that's not a requirement. The goal of the
program is to make them employable."
Women interested in this program can
contact SDHS, as can employers who are in-
terested in providing on-the-job experience
for these women.
Accused pleads guilty to murder
The Vanastra dance -hall murder trial
ended suddenly April 13 when the accused
pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Vienngeun Vongsa, 24, of Hamilton, had
originally pleaded not guilty to first-degree
murder in the shooting death of Bounmy
Thapraseuth last October. But last Thurs-
day Vongsa admitted in Ontario Supreme
Court that he killed Thapraseuth last
October.
Mr. Justice W.D. Chilcott sentenced
Vongsa to the minmum penalty for second-
degree murder: life imprisonment with
parole eligibility after 10 years.
Vongsa and Thapraseuth were among the
160 people attending a day -long tournament
and dance, sponsored by the Exeter Laotian
Soccer Club and held at the Vanastra
Recreation Centre.
Crown Attorney Bob Morris said Vongsa 's
"Turning point" might have been his
brother's testimony.
Morris said that Viengfet Vongsa's
testimony in court "dramatically con-
flicted" with the statement he gave police
two days after the shooting.
"I believe because of that (Viennegeun)
pled guilty (to second-degree murder),"
said Morris.
Morris said the verdict was
"appropriate".
During sentencing, Chilcott said Vongsa's
clean record and good character before the
killing indicates that he is "salvageable."
In his closing remarks, defence lawyer
George Walker,.said Vongsa has shown
regret for the crime.
"He has taken a life and he realizes that,"
said Walker.
Thapraseuth, 26, of Kitchener, died at
London's University Hospital two days after
he was shot. The shooting occurred after
Vongsa, who had been drinking all day,
spilled beer on a Kitchener man.
The court was told that Vongsa, who was
born in Laos, left the country when he was
14. He spent a year in a refugee camp in
Thailand and then immigrated to Toronto.
He entered school, leaving in Grade 10 to go
to work. He has held a number of jobs but
has always been employed. Vongsa became
a Canadian citizen in 1983.
