ON THE GREENS by Carolanne Doig Spring cleaning of golf equipment helps .game The only good thing about spring cleaning is the word spring, which isn't all that great either' except .that it's followed by summer and summer means golf! So if you have to do some spring cleaning why not start with your golf equipment. Then if we ever get a nice day you can stash the rubber gloves and exchange a bucket of Spic 'n Span for a bucket of balls. I love cleaning my golf equipment in April. In all honesty it's about the only time my equipment really gets a good cleaning. It's the old, "do as I say not as I do" syn- drome. Getting out the clubs in April really does mean that spring has sprung. If you followed my advice last fall and cleaned ' everything up before winter storage well you're ahead of the game. Go directly to the first tee. However, if you just didn't get around to it or you were lucky enough to go south over the winter, you should have a gander at your equipment. You'll need a bucket of warm soapy water, a soft brush, a soft dry cloth, some floor .wax,,and a garbage .bag handy. Stick the clubheads in the water to soak while you empty the golf bag. If you have parts of Florida stuck to your wedge it's a good idea to scrape this off while it's still dry. Now to the golf bag. Spread a newspaper on the floor and dump the bag upside down. Can you believe you carried allthat garbage around? Some of the things found at the bot- tom of a golf bag are absolutely scarey, especially if the bag has been stored in a warm dark place all winter. Now empty the pouches. Don't be frightened. That shrivell- ed up thing is your golf glove not a dead mouse. There's the extra set of car keys you've been looking for all winter. There may be some loose change, some tees, balls, and a wrinkled up score cards to remind you of the good times on the course last summer. Sometimes small plastic bags are handy for keeping tees, gloves, ball markers, pencils etc. in order.' It's been so long since I cleaned out my golf bag that I'm liable to find Jimmy Hoffa in it. Once the inside has been cleaned then wipe down the bag with soapy water and polish it with a soft dry cloth. Leather golf bags are few and far between but if you do own one it should be cleaned reguarly with a leather cleaner and conditioner. Meanwhile back in the bucket the clubs are soaking away and ready to be wiped off. A gentle scraper will get rid of any rust and a tee or dull knife is handy for cleaning the grooves. For the woods use a soft cloth and dry the woods right away. A little floor wax will get the woods up to a nice sheen and looking like new. A damp cloth along the shafts just takes off any excess grime, Grips should be cleaned regularly. Many golfers come in and think they need new grips on their clubs when all they really need is to give the grips a wash. Most people have rubber grips and they're easy to clean with a bit of warm soapy water and a soft brush like a nail brush. Leather grips need to be treated with leather cleaner and conditioner. Most headcovers are washable as are golf towels and it's a good idea to throw these in the machine before the start of the season. Make sure the head covers are dry before putting them on the woods. Your umbrella and rain suit might be a lit- tle worse for wear, especially if you rolled thein up still wet and left them in the bag all winter. Now's the time to air them out for the upcoming season ... and hope you never have to use them all summer. Now that your equipment is all set to go, the rest is up to Mother Nature. If you have all your spring cleaning done in the house and yard you'll be all set when they put the flags in at your local course. Think spring ! ! Men's night, ladies' night, couples' night, senior morning, junior morn- ing ... there's something for everyone on the golf course.
